The Storylines

Two years ago, incredulity was a common reaction both nationally and in some Clemson fan circles when Dabo Swinney tabbed then-analyst Wes Goodwin as Clemson's new defensive coordinator in the wake of Brent Venables' ascension to Oklahoma's head coaching job. In his second season leading Clemson's defensive unit in 2023, Goodwin has displayed why Swinney entrusted him with the role.

Goodwin, a Broyles Award nominee, has led Clemson's 10th-ranked total defense that has surrendered only 288.6 yards per game this year. He and his group were publicly challenged by Swinney over the offseason to improve its No. 76 national ranking in pass defense from 2022, and he and his unit have responded forcefully.

Boy, that was close to turnover No. 3 for South Carolina.

I know everyone likes the start for Clemson, but to be honest, I thought it gave the team a since of relief too early. Need to see them playing on edge soon.

Barrett Carter comes on the blitz and sacks Spencer Rattler. Both teams are under 100 yards offensively as the defensive slugfest continues.

58 seconds for Clemson to try and do something with no timeouts leading 13-7 before the halftime break.

Tigers will get the ball to start the second half. It has been a defensive ball game as Clemson has yet to score an offensive touchdown. Dabo Swinney said on the TV halftime interview that they need to get the run game going. Clemson with 89 yards rushing to go along with 126 total yards of offense.

Clemson's defense dominates the Gamecocks, forcing two turnovers and holding them to 169 yards of total offense. South Carolina will not make a bowl game. It's the first win for the Tigers without an offensive touchdown since 2014 against Louisville. What a night defensively.

Tigers should know their bowl destination next Sunday -- I've seen bowl projections that have the Tigers facing Oregon State in the Sun Bowl, which would be an interesting storyline with DJU. We'll just have to wait and see. This team has made significant strides in the last four weeks since the loss on the road at NC State. Now they'll have a chance to finish the season with nine wins with a bowl victory.
