WSOC: Tigers Run Past Paladins, Secure 4-1 Road Victory
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Clemson Tigers (3-1-0) secured their first road win of the season as they defeated Furman (1-4-0), 4-1 at Stone Stadium in Greenville. Megan Bornkamp, Maria Manousos and Dani Davis all picked up their first goals of the season while Mackenzie Duff netted her second of the year.
"It's always good to win," Head Coach Eddie Radwanski said. "We always have good matches with Furman, Andrew does a great job with his team, they are always going to compete hard against us. These games help us to get better. We did a really good job of taking care of the ball and being in control so we continue to keep taking steps. It's our fourth game so we are still getting used to each other and building that chemistry so I was really impressed with how we started out of the gate with our foot on the pedal."
The Tigers dominated the match early as Bornkamp found the back of the net at the nine minute mark of the first half. Davis was able to take possession of the ball and kick a high pass to Bornkamp, who scored off the header to sneak the ball past the Paladins keeper.
Two minutes after Bornkamp's goal, Manousos was able to secure her first goal of the season and the second of the night for the Tigers as she found the back of the net following a pass from Bornkamp. Manousos kicked the ball towards the top of the post as the keeper was unable to stop it.
To finish off the first half, Duff was the third Tiger to score as she put the ball past the post at the 24th minute mark. Sophomore Jenna Tobia shot the ball off the corner-kick as Duff jumped up for the ball and scored off the header. That marks Duff's second goal of the season and her second header of the year.
Finishing off the scoring run was Davis as she netted the fourth and final goal of the night off of a penalty-kick in the 48th minute of the second half.
Overall, Clemson out-shot Furman 23-6 as the Tigers held possession 60% of the match compared to the Paladins 40%.
Up next, the Tigers will head to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell on Sunday, September 1. The match is slated for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ and FloSports.
