No. 2 Clemson Drops Hard-Fought Match to No. 5 Stanford, 3-2

CLEMSON, S.C.- No. 5 Stanford used two first-half goals to down No. 2 Clemson, 3-2, in front of 6,179 fans at Historic Riggs Field on Friday evening in the teams’ first conference match of the season. 

The Tigers came out strong, putting the first goal of the night on the board at the 2:25 mark. Following a corner kick, Tyler Trimnal flicked the ball to Lukas Magnason, who flicked the ball into the top-right corner of the net to give the Tigers the early lead, but Stanford followed with a goal shortly after, scoring on a penalty kick at the 5:20 mark, tying the score at 1-1. The Cardinal took advantage of an own goal to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Stanford opened up a two-goal lead in the 75’, before Clemson was cut into the lead late. Joran Gerbet netted a goal on a free kick to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 76’. The Tigers had multiple chances to tie late in the game, but couldn’t capitalize, as the Cardinal heads west with a 3-2 victory in hand. 

The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m., hosting Loyola (Md.) at Historic Riggs Field for Youth League Night.
