Clemson Starts Poppie Era, Hosts Jackson State in Season Opener

CLEMSON, S.C - The Clemson Tigers women’s basketball team launches its historic 50th season against the Jackson State Tigers on Monday, November 4 in Littlejohn Coliseum.

The game will tip off at 2:30 p.m. and can be seen on ACCNX with Jon Gross and legendary Clemson coach Jim Davis on the call. It can also be heard on 105.5 The Roar or the Clemson Tigers app with William Qualkinbush and Faxon Childress on the broadcast.

This game will not only kick off the 50th season of women’s basketball at Clemson University, but it’s also the start of the Shawn Poppie era for the Tigers. Poppie was hired in March 2024 following back-to-back conference championship seasons at Chattanooga. During his time in Tennessee, the Mocs tallied a 48-18 record and advanced to back-to-back NCAA tournaments.

Upon arriving in Clemson, Poppie immediately took to the transfer portal and brought in nine newcomers. Among the student-athletes that Poppie brought in are Florence, S.C. native and former Georgia Tech and Alabama starting point guard Loyal McQueen. Tessa Miller, an all-Missouri Valley selection at Belmont, was also brought in to bolster the team’s post-play. Mia Moore, a springy 5’6” guard who averaged over 15 points and eight rebounds per game last season, signed with the Tigers from UAB. Hannah Kohn – who ranked third in the nation in three-point shooting last season – is another highlight signing from the transfer portal.

Overall, the Tigers brought in 10 new players which ranks tied for third-most newcomers of any team in the nation.

With the newcomers came an influx of shooting prowess. The Tigers are one of just three teams in the country to sign two transfer shooters who shot at least 40% from outside last season (Summah Evans, Kohn). Raven Thompson shot at a 38% clip from three-point land last season, and Mia Moore finished the year shooting 37%.

Jackson State, a 2024 NCAA tournament team that won 26 games last season, hired Margaret Richards this offseason. Richards spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant at Clemson prior to taking the head coaching job at Alabama A&M. Jackson State is one of eight teams that Clemson will host in LJC this season that played in the 2024 NCAA tournament.
