Wiggins’ 16 Leads Tiger Victory at Virginia Tech 72-57
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Clemson University men’s basketball won its fifth consecutive game and third-straight on the road in the ACC with an impressive 72-57 win at Virginia Tech on Saturday evening in Cassell Coliseum.
The Tigers (17-4, 9-1 ACC) were led by Chauncey Wiggins’ (Grayson, Ga./Grayson) team-high 16 points. Wiggins added five rebounds in the effort. He finished with four 3-pointers and six total field goals.
Viktor Lakhin (Anapa, Russia/CSKA-2/Cincinnati) and Jaeden Zackery (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central/Boston College) both netted 11 points.
The Tiger bench scored a season-high 25 points, which was led by Del Jones (Landover, Md./Arizona Compass Prep) and his 13 points. Jones added five rebounds and two assists to his career-high point total.
Clemson led at the half after a 41-point opening stanza and holding Virginia Tech to just four points in the paint. Clemson outscored Virginia Tech in that category for the game 36-20.
Chase Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) was held out of the starting lineup due to illness but joined the game in the second half at the under-12-minute timeout. Hunter helped stabilize a Tiger offense and helped aid them in victory.
The Tigers led by as many as 17 in the second half before the Hokies began to chip away and engineer a scoring run of their own. The Hokies closed the gap to just four points, but that’s the closest they would make it.
Clemson returns to the floor on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it travels to NC State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on The CW.
