Clemson's Triple OT Heartbreaker PLUS Realignment and Recruiting News!
Clemson basketball suffered a grueling triple-overtime loss to Georgia Tech on Tuesday night, snapping their six-game winning streak in what became a war of attrition at Littlejohn Coliseum. Meanwhile, the ACC’s latest realignment maneuver is raising eyebrows as the conference explores an unequal revenue-sharing model to keep top programs like Clemson and Florida State in the fold. And on the recruiting trail, 4-star offensive tackle Adam Guthrie has become a major target as Clemson battles Ohio State and Georgia for his commitment.
Triple-Overtime Heartbreak at Littlejohn
Clemson’s first Quad 3 loss of the season came in brutal fashion as the Tigers fell 89-86 in triple OT to Georgia Tech. Naithan George torched Clemson’s defense for 28 points, hitting clutch shots down the stretch to sink the Tigers, much like he did in their previous matchup a year ago.
Despite the loss, Ian Schieffelin played through injury and dominated with 23 points, keeping Clemson alive when their offense stalled. Chauncey Wiggins continued his impressive stretch with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to maintain the team’s perfect record when he scores in double figures.
Clemson’s overtime struggles continued, dropping to 1-3 in OT games this season, a concerning trend with March Madness on the horizon. Now, they must regroup quickly before a critical showdown against Duke on Saturday.
Can the ACC Keep Clemson?
The latest ACC realignment buzz centers around a proposed unequal revenue-sharing model that would reward top-performing programs like Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and North Carolina with a larger share of TV revenue. The goal is to narrow the financial gap between the ACC and the SEC/Big Ten, where schools are poised to earn $80+ million annually in media rights deals.
While this may seem like a win for Clemson on the surface, Thomas pointed out the historical risks of such a system.
Clemson and Florida State have active lawsuits against the ACC, and there’s no guarantee that a few extra million per year will keep them from jumping ship if an SEC or Big Ten invitation comes.
Clemson Making Moves for 4-Star OT Adam Guthrie
On the recruiting front, Matt Luke is already making his presence felt as Clemson gains momentum in the race for 4-star OT Adam Guthrie. The 6’7”, 285-pound lineman from Ohio has been a top target for Ohio State, Georgia, and Penn State, but 247Sports experts Allen Trieu and Cory Fravel have both predicted him to land at Clemson.
One key factor? Ohio State’s offensive line coach Justin Frye just left for the Arizona Cardinals, opening the door for Clemson to capitalize on the instability in Columbus.
With Guthrie expected to visit Clemson for the Elite Retreat in March, the Tigers may have the chance to lock in his commitment before spring.
