--Updated --

Clemson's quarterback depth took a big hit this morning with the news that former 5-star quarterback Hunter Johnson would be transferring.

Johnson becomes the third quarterback to leave since the end of the season. The Tigers lost Zerrick Cooper and Tucker Isreal to transfers previously.

Clemson Sports Talk
Hunter Johnson takes a snap during the Georgia Tech game.

Johnson, a rising true sophomore, battled with incumbent Kelly Bryant, 5-star freshman Trevor Lawrence, and Chase Brice, in the spring. Lawrence's performance seemed to put all the quarterbacks on alert as the top-rated prospect looked the part in late April.

Johnson seemed to like where he was following the spring game, and Dabo Swinney told us that, “Hunter is light years ahead of where he was this time last year.”

The Brownsburg, Indiana native completed 21-27 attempts for 234 yards and two touchdowns and one interception during his short tenure in Clemson. Johnson had a decent spring game performance going 8-14 for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception

The Tigers will enter the season with Bryant, Lawrence, and Brice on the depth chart.

Johnson seems to be interested in schools closer to his home state of Indiana and will have three years left to play after sitting out due to his transfer.

We will have more as this story continues to develop.

Not surprised at all.

Face it, Trevor Lawrence is a beast. If it wasn't Bryant's last season, I would have expected him to leave in all honesty.

I cannot see Bryant fending off Lawrence either. The cream will rise to the top and Lawrence is going to be superb.

I thought it might happen, but man that stings. Not saying he would have been the guy, but it sure feels like he ran from the competition. That was just a tough situation with Lawrence coming behind him.

Good luck Hunter!
