Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and defensive coordinator Brent Venables updated the media following Clemson's final scrimmage in Death Valley.

Highlights from Venables:

Position group that needs most work from situational work:

  • “I think we’re going to have to count on some of our young corners. I think that’s where you lack the most experience and so, just helping them come along and grow up here in the next few weeks and even once you get into the season, there will be some growth that takes place.”

Personality of the defense when you have to respond day in and day out:

  • “It’s tough. We intentionally try to put stress on them and get them to react to things maybe they’re not prepared for and see how they react, whether it’s on the field or in the meeting room. We’ve got a lot of experience coming back. It’s a very mature group of guys. They know how to work, they know how to prepare, they know how to get coached the right way, they respond the right way and they love to compete and practice. They are who we thought and what we hoped they were through the first couple of weeks.”

Highlights from Elliott:

Overall:

  • The effort was good and the competition is good.

Wide receivers:

  • Tee Higgins, Derion Kendrick, Justyn Ross are all competing well and it’s hard to see separation between the trio.

The young freshman running back:

  • J-Lyn Dixon has room for improvement, especially in the passing game, but is explosive with the ball in his hands.
