Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables’ name has been circled on many college football programs’ wish list as the coaching carousel continues to be in full swing at this time of year.

There have been reports that SEC programs like Arkansas and Mississippi State are interested in the defensive coordinator to be their next head coach.

Venables met with the media today and had a chance to address those rumors and reports himself.

“My focus is completely on this game, this week, and the great job that I do have and the great players I get to coach every day,” Venables said. “My focus is right here.”

He was followed up with another question on if he gets flattered or annoyed when he hears his name being mentioned in these types of reports.

Venables chose the latter.

“Well, since you all bring it up, it’s annoying. I don’t hear about it otherwise, whatever is out there because I just don’t spend any time focused on that.”

Venables then talked about how his loyalty lies with his Clemson squad that has its eyes on a third straight ACC championship and College Football Playoff berth.

“I’ve got a great job and - again I have said that many, many times - and I am very thankful and grateful for that. We are in a great position so why would I be worried about what’s on the other side of the fence? I have always felt that way. If people have interest, that’s part of it. You either decide to listen or not. Right now, we’ve got a tremendous opportunity this week playing for a championship, and my loyalty is to here and our players.”

Venables was the recipient of the 2016 Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. His 2016 group amassed 130 tackles for loss and a school-record 49 sacks. His teams have led the NCAA in total tackles for loss each of the last four seasons.

As his name continues to be brought up as a top candidate for coaching jobs since he is considered a top assistant coach in the country, Clemson fans can rest easy for now knowing that his focus is on his players, team, and its goals.
