The Storylines

Clemson and Iowa State meet for the first time ever in tonight’s Cheez-It Bowl matchup. The Tigers are going for their 10th win, giving them their 11th consecutive 10-win season, placing the Tigers alongside Florida State (14 from 1987-2000) and Alabama (14 from 2008-21) as the only programs ever to reach double-digit wins in 11 straight seasons.

It is also the debut of new coordinators on both sides of the ball for the Tigers: Brandon Streeter replaces Tony Elliott who left for Virginia on offense while Wes Goodwin and Mickey Conn are the new co-defensive coordinators, replacing Brent Venables who left for Oklahoma.

Good evening everyone! Clemson kicks off in Orlando against Iowa State for the final time in 2021 in about 20 minutes. The game is on ESPN. How about Maryland putting it on Virginia Tech -- 54 points.

A little bit surprised with the QB draw on 3rd and goal but nonetheless, B.T. Potter gets the Tigers on the board from 32 yards out with a field goal. Clemson leads 3-0 with 6:52 to play in the opening quarter. A long 15-play, 69 yard opening drive.

Myles Murphy blew up the inside run play on 3rd and short. The run couldn't even get going. Iowa State is forced to punt with 5:01 to play first quarter -- Clemson leads 3-0.

Iowa State brings the blitz on 3rd down which forces the under throw from D.J. and the Tigers are forced to punt. 2:07 to play in the first with the Cyclones about to get the ball back. Clemson leads 3-0.

END 1Q: Clemson leads Iowa State 3-0.

Cyclones just picked up a 14-yard gain on a run play and will have it near midfield when play resumes in the second quarter.

Brock Purdy missed an open Chase Allen on a throw that was too hot. But they do get a field goal out of a nice drive and tie the game at 3 with 11:25 to play before the half in Orlando.

Will Shipley has to catch that dump off pass. Good job by DJ to elude the pressure and dump it off there on 3rd down though. Tigers go 3-and-out with 10:34 to play in the second quarter. We are tied at 10 in Orlando.

Timeout Clemson. Brock Purdy just picked up a third down with his legs on the scramble. Skalski was banged up for the Tigers during the play as well. 8:48 to play in the second quarter. Clemson and Iowa State are tied at 3.

Excellent anticipation leads to the PBU for Mario Goodrich. Iowa St. is forced to punt on 3rd down and Clemson will have a chance to get more points on the two minute drill before the half. Tigers lead 6-3.

A streak of 13 made field goal ends for B.T. Potter in Orlando as he missed a 36-yard FG wide left to end the half. TV broadcast made the remark that the first one to score a touchdown in the game might be the winner. And I believe they're right.

I'm not sure how you call that roughing penalty. I didn't even realize players who catch a backward pass was even eligible for that call.

Clemson is forced to punt but Iowa State will have to go the length of the field to try and tie the game. They'll have it 1st and 10 on their own 2 when play resumes. Clemson leads 20-13 with 6:55 to play in the game.
