Florida State Board votes to file suit against the ACC

Florida State’s Board of Trustees has voted to file suit against the ACC and challenge the Grant of Rights Agreement. The decision marks a significant shift in the college sports landscape, with potentially far-reaching implications for both conferences and the broader NCAA community, as FSU is the first school to ever challenge a Grant of RIghts Agreement.

The ACC Grant of Rights Agreement was established to ensure stability and mutual commitment among member institutions of the conference. It served as a legally binding contract between the ACC and its member schools. The document can only be viewed at the ACC’s headquarters and no copies can be made. The primary purpose of the Grant of Rights is to protect the conference's media rights and broadcast deals by granting certain exclusive rights to the ACC and its broadcasting partner, ESPN.

This exclusivity means that member institutions cannot independently negotiate media rights or leave the conference without repercussions-- yet the Seminoles have decided to challenge the agreement. The FSU Board estimates that the total exit cost would be roughly $572,000,000.

Florida State University joined the ACC in 1992, bringing its storied football program to the conference. One of the primary motivations could be financial gains, but the Seminoles were left out of the College Football Playoff after an undefeated season, though they lost their starting quarterback, Jordan Travis, before the final rankings were released.
