When national pundits think of Clemson football, they naturally drift toward the powerhouse offenses led by Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson over that last decade or so. But lurking beneath the bright lights during that time has always been a defensive unit that prides itself on self-reliance and unwavering determination.

This season, that hasn’t changed and the defense has been called on to navigate choppier waters than usual with the offense having growing pains with a young quarterback and a new offensive coordinator in Garrett Riley. Recently, senior safety R.J. Mickens shed light on the mindset that fuels Wes Goodwin’s defensive group.

As Mickens spoke, it became abundantly clear that the Clemson defense doesn't enter games with their heads filled with thoughts of the offensive fireworks the Tigers have been renowned for. Instead, they're on a relentless mission to execute their roles to perfection, focused solely on their job. In doing so, the Tigers have weathered several uncharacteristic offensive performances like the 17-12 win over Wake Forest last weekend.

"You know, you just never know. You can't worry about the other side of the ball going into the game," Mickens noted of the final result against the Demon Deacons.

Mickens, hailing from Southlake, Texas, is not just a man of words but a player of action. With 24 tackles and three passes defended in six games this season, he's been a defensive stalwart for the Tigers. Starting every game this year, his commitment to the team's success is undeniable.

One aspect that shines through the Clemson defense is the next-man-up mentality. Mickens acknowledged the grit and determination displayed by the young talents who stepped in when veteran defensive back Jalyn Phillips went down.

"It's just a testament to our preparation," Mickens noted. "We were down three starters, and we had the young guys step up. We had three true freshmen playing who have all been putting in work ever since they got here, and they are going to be really special."

"Just knowing who we have playing beside us, like Ruke Orhorhoro, Xavier Thomas, Tyler Davis, Justin Mascol, and all the veterans we have, along with the young depth pushing us to get better each day, it's really special," Mickens stated.

Mickens is quick to appreciate the competitive environment within the defensive backfield. Young guns like Khalil Barnes and Shelton Lewis, who play like seasoned veterans, are keeping the competition fierce and ensuring that every week is a proving ground.

"Seeing those guys so hungry really creates a very competitive environment each week," Mickens emphasized. It's this very competition that drives excellence and keeps Clemson's defense at the top of their game.

Not to be overlooked is the crucial connection between the secondary and the formidable front line on Clemson's defense. Mickens pays homage to the guys up front, acknowledging their pivotal role in the team's success.

"Just knowing who we have playing beside us, like Ruke Orhorhoro, Xavier Thomas, Tyler Davis, Justin Mascol, and all the veterans we have, along with the young depth pushing us to get better each day, it's really special," Mickens stated.

Clemson's defense, it seems, thrives on unity and the tireless pursuit of excellence. As R.J. Mickens revealed, their focus isn't on the numbers the offense will put up. It's their duty to lock down the opposition. With young talent rising and a strong front line, the Tigers' defense is not the supporting act; they are a force to be reckoned with.
