CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson University men’s basketball put together a strong second half to defeat Mercer on Saturday afternoon 70-63 in Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tigers (8-3) trailed the Bears at halftime 39-33, but won the second stanza 37-24 to clinch their eighth victory of the season.
Dillon Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) led the way for Clemson with 15 points and finished a plus-16 in the contest, second only to RJ Godfrey’s (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett/Georgia) plus-17. Godfrey finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Joining Hunter and Godfrey in double-figures was Nick Davidson (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mater Dei) who scored 12 points – his fifth double-digit scoring game of the season.
Off the Tiger bench, Zac Foster (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) totaled 10 of the Tigers’ 22 bench points and added a career-high seven rebounds. Jestin Porter (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ridge/Middle Tennessee State) also scored 10 points for the Tigers.
After allowing Mercer to shoot 64.0 percent in the first half, Clemson locked them down in the second half to 34.5 percent shooting and just 24 points.
Notes: Clemson improved to 8-3 with the win and 8-4 all-time against Mercer … Head Coach Brad Brownell won his 300th game at Clemson and his 467th of his career … Brownell became the 10th coach in ACC history to win 300 games at the same school, while that school was in the ACC … trailing by six at halftime, Clemson claimed its first victory with a halftime deficit this season … Dillon Hunter led the Tigers with 15 points, his fourth double-digit scoring game of the season … Carter Welling tied a career high with three steals … Zac Foster set a new season/career high with seven rebounds … RJ Godfrey turned in his fourth game with at least eight rebounds.
