The Match-Up:

Clemson (4-2, 2-1 ACC) vs. Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-2 ACC)

Homecoming under the lights in Death Valley brings a critical ACC matchup as Clemson welcomes Virginia Tech for the first time since 2012. The Tigers have won seven straight against the Hokies, but this year's matchup features two programs trying to position themselves for a strong finish in the conference race.

For Clemson, the question remains whether its offense can generate enough points to complement a defense and solid special teams, the team's most consistent strengths.

Kickoff:

  • Saturday, Oct. 24, 7 p.m. ET
  • TV: ESPN (Roy Philpott, Brock Osweiler, Sherree Burruss)
  • Radio: Clemson Athletic Network (Don Munson, Jeff Scott, Tim Bourret)
  • Satellite Radio: SiriusXM 132 or 235
  • Venue: Memorial Stadium | Clemson, S.C.

Last Week: Clemson defeated Charleston Southern 37-0, holding the Buccaneers to just 76 total yards, including six in the second half. Nolan Hauser connected on three field goals, including a 59-yarder, while the Tigers rushed for more than 200 yards. Despite the shutout and comfortable victory, questions remain about Clemson's downfield passing game as the competition gets significantly tougher.

Series History:

Clemson leads the all-time series 24-12-1 and has won seven consecutive meetings dating back to 2011. The Tigers hold a 9-6-1 advantage in games played in Clemson, although Saturday will mark just Virginia Tech's third visit to Death Valley since joining the ACC in 2004.

The last meeting came in 2024, when Clemson defeated the Hokies 24-14 in Blacksburg.

Saturday also marks Dabo Swinney's first matchup against new Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin, who will become the 100th different opposing head coach Swinney has faced.

Tim Bourret's Perspective:

During his appearance on Clemson Sports Talk, longtime Clemson Sports Information Director Tim Bourret recalled one of the most remarkable examples of Death Valley's home-field advantage, fittingly against Virginia Tech during Homecoming in 1978.

With Clemson protecting a 13-7 lead late in the game, Virginia Tech drove to the Tigers' one-yard line. But the noise inside Memorial Stadium became a factor.

“The crowd was just going crazy. And so the quarterback of Virginia Tech once looked back at the referee, can't hear the signals, goes back and huddles up, does it a second time, does it a third time, and on the third time, the referee pointed back at him like, run the play.”

Virginia Tech eventually committed a procedure penalty, settled for a field goal and Clemson escaped with a 13-10 victory.

Bourret also addressed the ongoing discussion surrounding freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds and the potential return of Christopher Vizzina, who has been working his way back from an elbow injury.

“Tait Reynolds is the future. So it'll take something for Dabo to pull him, I'm sure. But that said, if Vizzina is  fully healthy and Dabo thinks he can do the job, then he would put him in there.”

For now, Reynolds remains Clemson's starter, but with the passing game struggling to produce touchdowns, pressure to find answers keeps building.

Swanny's Rant & Reality Check:

Remember when we could just roll into a Friday afternoon, look at Clemson's opponent and feel pretty comfortable predicting a blowout?

Those days seem like a distant memory.

Now, every week feels like a question mark.

Clemson's defense has been good enough to give this team a chance, but the offense hasn't consistently delivered. The offensive line has struggled at times, the downfield passing game has been almost nonexistent, and the receivers haven't always made the plays available to them.

That's where I think we have to be fair to Reynolds.

He's a freshman. He missed his senior season of high school football. He's going to make mistakes, and he's going to miss throws. But when he gives a receiver an opportunity to make a play, somebody has to step up and help the kid out.

I've heard the calls for Vizzina, and I don't necessarily disagree with the idea of giving him an opportunity if the offense is struggling. But I still believe Reynolds is Clemson's best option for the future.

Saturday night isn't about the future, though.

It's about winning a football game Clemson desperately needs if the Tigers want to remain in the ACC championship conversation.

And Virginia Tech isn't coming to Death Valley to roll over.

Keys to Victory:

1. Make Virginia Tech Pay Up Front: The Hokies surrendered seven sacks against Georgia Tech last weekend, and now they're dealing with additional injuries along the offensive line. Clemson needs to take advantage. Will Heldt, Sammy Brown and the Tigers' defensive front should have opportunities to disrupt quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, particularly in obvious passing situations. With several offensive linemen unavailable, Virginia Tech could struggle to consistently protect its quarterback. Clemson needs to turn that advantage into sacks, hurried throws and third-down stops.

2. Help Tait Reynolds Make Plays Downfield: Clemson's passing game has produced just two touchdown passes through six games. That's simply not good enough. The Tigers need Bryant Wesco Jr., T.J. Moore and the rest of the receiving corps to make plays when opportunities present themselves. Virginia Tech will likely be without starting cornerback Thomas Williams, giving Clemson a potential advantage to exploit. Reynolds doesn't need to throw for 350 yards, but Clemson can't keep relying exclusively on short passes and the run. At some point, the Tigers have to stretch the field and force defenses to respect their receivers.

3. Contain Jeffrey Overton Jr. and Limit Explosive Plays: Virginia Tech has offensive weapons capable of causing problems. Jeffrey Overton Jr. leads the Hokies with 613 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 103 carries, while adding 22 receptions for 219 yards and two scores. Meanwhile, Quayshawn Brown has 46 receptions for 616 yards and three touchdowns, including a six-catch, 182-yard performance against Georgia Tech last weekend. Clemson's secondary has been one of the team's biggest strengths, but the linebackers must also account for Overton as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Force Virginia Tech to earn its yards and prevent the explosive plays that can change a game in a hurry.

Prediction:

There was a time when Clemson fans could look at a game like this and expect the Tigers to win comfortably. Not anymore.

Too many questions surround this offense, from an inconsistent offensive line to a passing game that hasn't produced enough downfield plays. Reynolds has taken his lumps, but his receivers need to start helping him.

Defensively, I like Clemson's matchup against Virginia Tech. I don't think Ethan Grunkemeyer is an elite quarterback, even with the numbers he’s had this season. Tom Allen's defense has the personnel to make things difficult for him. My issue is that the Hokies have legitimate playmakers, and Overton and Brown can create problems.

This is a toss-up.

Put these teams on a neutral field, and I could see it going either way. But they're not playing on a neutral field.

They're playing in Death Valley, under the lights, on Homecoming.

I'm leaning on that home-field advantage. I'm leaning on Tom Allen's familiarity with James Franklin. And I'm leaning on the belief that Clemson's offense is getting better, even if the improvement hasn't always shown up on the scoreboard.

I'd like to see more designed runs for Reynolds, a commitment to the ground game, and some help from the receivers when Clemson takes its shots downfield.

My confidence level isn't particularly high, but I'll take the Tigers to find a way.

The Pick: Clemson 27, Virginia Tech 23
