Clemson cornerback Ashton Hampton has emerged as one of the nation's top defensive backs, earning recognition as a Paycom Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist and NFL prospect. But despite the accolades, three people aren't letting his success go to his head: his father, his mother, and cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

The relationship between Hampton and Reed is rooted in a friendship with his father, Alonzo Hampton, that began nearly three decades ago, before Clemson.

Reed and the elder Hampton were teammates and roommates with the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in 1999, helping the franchise capture a World Bowl championship.

"We spent a lot of time together, and that's one of the things about the great game of football. It's a brotherhood, the family atmosphere and the things that you take away from the game of football," Reed said on Tuesday.

That bond eventually brought Reed into Ashton's life. Having known him since he was a baby, Reed reconnected with Hampton during his youth football days in 2017. Years later, he would become his position coach at Clemson, a relationship Hampton describes as having a second father.

Reed has watched Hampton, a 2024 ACC Honor Roll and 2025 All-ACC Academic Team selection who has recorded 27 tackles, 10 pass breakups and an interception this season, grow from an outgoing youngster into a leader in the secondary, with his greatest improvement coming in areas beyond his physical abilities.

"Maturity," Reed said when asked where Hampton has grown the most. "And so just to see the maturity far as handling certain situations, being even more outgoing when it comes to people, watching film, being a leader, and understanding that things he did when he was young -- there's a time to be funny but then there's a time to be serious."

Hampton's journey has also become an example for younger players who weren't highly recruited prospects.

"And then to hear his story, how he came in as a freshman, wasn't a five-star kid, and worked his way into what he is now, and still working. It lets people know, like, whoa, if he can do it, I can do it too," Reed said.

Hampton has a unique support system that includes two experienced football coaches and a mother who might be his toughest critic.

His father, Alonzo, has served as head coach at Arkansas–Pine Bluff since 2023, following more than a decade in collegiate defensive and special teams roles and previous high school coaching experience in Arkansas and Georgia.

The elder Hampton regularly discusses games and offers advice to his son, while Reed's demanding approach keeps him grounded.

"With him, you might go out there, you might make a play, you might make a good pass break up, and he's still gonna find a way to give you a minus on the play," said Hampton. "That's just really who he is right there, and be a pretty tough critic. But he's also gonna be the first one to celebrate you too."

But Reed acknowledged that Hampton's mother, Yolanda, plays an equally important role, joking that she's the real coach in the family. Whenever Reed encounters an issue with Ashton, he knows he can call her, and she'll be the first to address it.

Hampton confirmed that all three regularly critique his performances and his mother, like Reed, isn't easily impressed by praise from the media.

"Whatever she feels isn't right, she's gonna let me know regardless of whether I played a good game or not. The media might say, 'Oh, you had a great game.' She's gonna say, 'Why didn't you do that? Why didn't you do that right there? Why didn't you go catch the ball?' explained the Tallahassee, FL native. "And just having somebody like that in my corner is just something that's amazing, and I truly have people around me that have my best interest at heart and are always caring for me and push for me to be the best player on and off the field."

Even with national recognition and NFL aspirations, Hampton knows the expectations at home and in Clemson's meeting rooms won't change. Neither will the people holding him to them.
