The Storylines
Clemson's top-ranked scoring defense (10.1 points per game) has allowed only three points in each of its last two contests and has held opponents out of the end zone in each of the last nine quarters. After allowing only three points in each of its last two games, Clemson will attempt to hold a third consecutive opponent to single-digit points for the first time since the first three games of the 2000 season. If Clemson were to hold Virginia to three or fewer points, it would be Clemson's first streak allowing three or fewer points in three straight games since 1981.
Bolstered by what Head Coach Dabo Swinney has called the best back seven of his tenure, Clemson's pass defense has ascended to the top of every nearly statistical pass defense category. Clemson ranks first or tied for first in the country in opponent passing yards per game, opponent completions, opponent completion percentage, opponent passing yards per attempt, opponent passer rating and opponent passing touchdowns. While FBS teams have thrown at least six touchdowns in a single game 19 times this season, Clemson has allowed only six total passing touchdowns all year.
Clemson is also attempting to extend its active streak of wins by 30 or more points to eight to break the longest streak in the AP Poll era (since 1936). Per ESPN Stats & Info, Clemson is presently tied with 2011 Houston and 1976 Michigan at seven each.
