A few minutes ago, Clemson University head coach Dabo Swinney gave an update on leading wide receiver Justyn Ross.

Ross recently underwent surgery for a lingering stinger injury that he began to experience back during the spring. When Swinney addressed the issue previously he noted that he didn’t seem too worried about it being overly significant. That sentiment changed when he and Ross were shown an x-ray by the team doctors that revealed a “congenital fusion” in his back.

After many discussions with the doctors, Ross made the decision to undergo surgery for this fusion which will end his 2020 season.

Swinney noted that “he will not play this fall.”

Today’s news means that the Tigers will look towards Joseph Ngata, Frank Ladson and Amari Rodgers to fill the void created by the absence of Ross.

Ross had 66 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore to follow up his brilliant freshman season where he hauled in 46 receptions for 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns, including two stellar playoff games against Notre Dame and Alabama in 2018.

According to Swinney, Clemson expects Ross to be able to return at some point in 2021 should the junior decide to return for another season of college football.
