Graduate transfer Jordan Thompson entered the game in the 70th minute and scored less than three minutes into her debut to help No. 5 Clemson (1-1) past High Point, 2-0, on Sunday in the 2024 home opener at Historic Riggs Field.

“It’s always good to win the home opener and every win is important, ” Head Coach Eddie Radwanski said. “We are a little bit of a younger team so every time we are given a chance to get out on the field and compete, it only helps us to get better and build our chemistry and DNA. This is a fabulous facility to play in, the home fans are always bringing good energy so we love being here.”

Scoring the first Clemson goal of the season, Thompson took a cross from Maria Manousos, who received the ball from freshman Kendall Bodak and placed it in the top left corner to put the game out of reach.

Clemson (1-1) got on the board in the fifth minute on a High Point own goal, and kept the pressure on, outshooting the Panthers (0-2) 16-2. Goalkeeper Nona Reason earned the shutout, making a diving save on High Point’s only shot attempt on goal in the 58th minute. Clemson controlled play throughout, holding 74 percent of possession in the game.

Freshman Ella Johnson secured her first collegiate start while Thompson, Anna Rydin and Allie Serlenga all made their Clemson debuts at Historic Riggs Field.

The Tigers were celebrating the 2023 season, in which the Tigers advanced to the College Cup for the first time in program history.

Next up, the Tigers will play host to West Virginia on Friday, August 23 at Historic Riggs Field. The match is slated for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ACCNX. The game is themed around student tailgate as there will be food trucks and shaved ice for fans.
