As Sammy Brown flew across the field in his Clemson home debut against Appalachian State, his mullet trailing behind him like a flash, it became clear that this five-star freshman linebacker is much more than just a highly touted recruit.

Brown arrived in Death Valley on Saturday night with the kind of buzz that has surrounded him since his standout days at Jefferson High School in Georgia. At 6'2" and 235 pounds, Brown was one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2024 class, and his home debut in Clemson’s 66-20 rout of the Mountaineers showed why.

“It’s really exciting,” Brown said of finally suiting up for the Tigers. “I’ve been here since January, so I’ve had a really good time just learning, going through the whole process of learning the playbook, getting around the guys, so it was really exciting to finally get out on the field and contribute to the team.”

Brown’s performance earned him the Special Teams MVP from head coach Dabo Swinney, a recognition that speaks to his immediate impact. But despite the accolades, Brown remains his own toughest critic.

"I thought the best thing that I did was fly to the ball, but I've definitely got a lot of stuff that I've gotta work on. I was a little hesitant," he admitted. “As good as the stat book looked, I do have a lot of things that I have to work on."

Brown credits his father, Mike, who also served as his coach at Jefferson, for instilling the ability to reflect on his performances. Even after Brown’s night under the lights, his father kept the feedback coming to the freshman star.

“It was a very brief compliment, and then he got into some things that I could work on," Brown said with a laugh. "He’s going to critique me as he is.”

That dynamic has been a constant throughout Brown’s football journey. “It’s a blessing because he’s always going to keep me humble. He was there to make sure that I’m doing the right thing and that I’m in the right place,” Brown reflected on his father’s influence. “He never let me get too big for myself through the whole recruiting process.”

Brown acknowledges that the leap from high school star to college standout is significant. In high school, he balanced playing on both sides of the ball, excelling as a running back and linebacker, but college has allowed him to hone in on defense.

“Honestly, it was just a big jump from high school to college,” he said. “Now that I’m in college, I’m able to focus more on defense and understanding what the offense is going to do in certain formations.”

Clemson Sports Talk
Sammy Brown fires up the fans after making a play during Clemson’s Spring Game in April.

With two games under his belt, Brown knows the work is just beginning, especially now that redshirt sophomore Kobe McCloud is out for the year with a knee injury. Brown texted McCloud earlier this week to let him know that everything happens for a reason, trying to lift his teammate's spirits.

“I feel like this comes with great responsibility to fill his shoes,” Brown noted of the loss of McCloud for Clemson’s defense.

Brown also recognizes there is a lot to work on to be the player that he wants to be. “I came back to work yesterday, focusing on having my eyes in the right spot, being more aggressive to the ball, and just being an overall more complete player,” he said.

“I just feel like the biggest thing that I can do for this team is contribute, and that could be in any way. So if there’s any way that I can make this team better, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

The freshman linebacker’s willingness to contribute in any capacity hasn’t gone unnoticed. Whether it’s on special teams, defense, or wherever the Tigers need him, Brown is committed to doing whatever it takes.

“I just feel like the biggest thing that I can do for this team is contribute, and that could be in any way. So if there’s any way that I can make this team better, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

Off the field, Brown’s personality and style are just as electric as his play. Sporting a signature mullet, the linebacker brings a unique flair to Clemson’s locker room. When asked about possibly cutting the mullet, Brown joked, “If I ever cut my mullet, I’m going straight to a buzz cut. Probably bleaching it, too.”

And will that happen any time soon?

“Hopefully not,” he said with a smile.
