Phil Mafah, the quiet powerhouse behind Clemson’s running game, has gone from a co-star in the Tigers’ backfield to the undisputed leader of the ground attack. Following the departure of former backfield mate Will Shipley, Mafah has embraced his role as the lead back, relishing both the responsibility and the opportunity to showcase his dedication to Clemson's success.

Standing 6’1 and weighing in at 230 pounds, Mafah has proven himself more than capable of handling the workload thus far. Through the season, he has amassed 682 yards on 105 carries, reaching the end zone six times. Beyond his rushing numbers, Mafah has also been an asset in the passing game, catching eight passes for 42 yards.

Yet, Mafah’s commitment to this expanded role goes beyond stats. It's the physical and mental preparation, the work that happens away from game day, that he says makes all the difference.

"It could be highs and lows to it," he says about managing the grind of a lead-back role. "Being a football player—injuries are a part of the game, and you're never going to feel 100% throughout the season, so you just got to work on maintaining that."

As the season has worn on, Mafah has leaned into the daily routines that keep him healthy. “It comes down to just your priorities and your scheduling, just making sure you're getting treatment and doing everything you can on a daily basis to treat your body,” he explained.

For Mafah, taking care of his body is paramount, and he approaches it with the professionalism of a seasoned veteran. “It's your greatest asset in this game, so you’ve just got to be a pro in that aspect, so that helps a lot.”

The timing of Clemson’s second bye week also provided a much-needed break for Mafah and his teammates.

“The bye week helps a lot, just having a week where you get to focus on getting your body back and focus on the little things. That always helps, too.” This chance to regroup has allowed him to maintain his physical health, keeping him on track to be a force for Clemson in the back half of the season.

On the field, Mafah’s contributions extend beyond yardage and touchdowns. He’s a versatile weapon, and his pride in pass protection shows his dedication to the small yet crucial details of his position.

“Being versatile in my role, being able to run the ball, and pass protection—I take pride in both things, and whatever the team needs me to do, I'll be there to do that as long as we get what we want, and that's to be able to go down the field and score.”

Despite his elevated status, Mafah remains humble and team-focused, celebrating when his fellow running backs get opportunities. “I'm happy with everything as long as we get the results we want. I'm happy to see the other guys get opportunities, and that's less for me. It's great to see, honestly.”

Part of Clemson’s offensive revival has been the sheer explosiveness Mafah brings to each carry. His bruising style and quick decision-making allow the Tigers to strike quickly and keep defenses on edge.

“Making explosive plays, just getting down the field really quick—it allows us to just put more points on the board and allows our offense to be versatile—not just me,” Mafah noted. “We have so many weapons.”

Mafah’s focus and adaptability have elevated him from a strong, reliable option in the backfield to the kind of game-changer who can define a season—a season with much promise as the Tigers head to the field this evening against Louisville.
