Chase Hunter’s 20 Points and Dagger Three Lifts Clemson 78-75 at Pitt

PITTSBURGH – Clemson University men’s basketball earned its second road win of the week on Saturday afternoon – 78-75 at Pittsburgh. Chase Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) scored 20 points, including a dagger 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime.

The Tigers (15-4, 7-1 ACC) were led by Hunter’s 20 points, Ian Schieffelin’s (Atlanta, Ga./Grayson) double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Jaeden Zackery’s (Salem, Wis./ /Westosha Central/Boston College) 16 points.

Chauncey Wiggins (Grayson, Ga./Grayson) totaled 11 points – helping the Tigers move to 9-0 when he scores in double figures. Dillon Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) added 10 points and six assists off the bench for Clemson, adding zero turnovers and three steals.

Clemson led by as many as 12 points in the opening stanza and would take a 10-point lead into the locker room, 40-30.

The Tigers pushed its lead to a game-high 14 points on two occasions, but Pittsburgh closed the gap over the next six minutes to tie the score 57-57. The Panthers took their first lead with 5:43 to go at 62-61 and tied it again with 19 seconds left to force overtime.

In the extra period, Clemson outscored Pittsburgh 12-9. On a huge offensive rebound by Dillon Hunter, the Tigers found Wiggins for a wing 3-pointer to go up five. Then with a 75-73 lead and 14 seconds to go, Chase Hunter lost Jaland Lowe on the near sideline and hit nothing but net to help seal the victory.

The Tigers’ 14 made 3-pointers were tied for eighth in program history, the fourth-most threes in a road game in program history, the fifth-most threes in an ACC game in program history and tied for the fourth-most threes in an ACC road game in program history.

Clemson finished 50.9 percent from the field (27-53) and 51.9 percent from three (14-27).

The Tigers return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they host Syracuse at 7 p.m. on ACCN.
