Three second-half goals powered No. 6 Clemson past in-state rival South Carolina, 4-1, in front of 6,536 fans on Tuesday night at Historic Riggs Field. The win was the Tigers’ first of the season, while the Gamecocks dropped to 1-1 on the year.
The Tigers struck first as Ransford Gyan found the back of the net in the 31st minute. The goal was Gyan’s second of the season after scoring one at Indiana Thursday night. Joseph Andema made two first-half saves to keep the Tigers in front after 45 minutes.
In the 54th, Nathan Richmond netted his second goal of the season off a misplay by the South Carolina keeper to double the Tigers’ lead, before South Carolina cut the margin back to one in the 57th. Clemson finished out the match strong with goals by Wahabu Musah and Misei Yoshizawa, earning the Tigers’ first point in the Palmetto Series rivalry (sponsored by the South Carolina Education Lottery).
