The Match-Up:

Clemson (3-4, 2-3 ACC) vs. Duke (4-3, 3-1 ACC)

After an open date last week, Clemson will return home to Death Valley amid the university's annual Homecoming Week when the Tigers face the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, Nov. 1. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium in Clemson is set for noon ET on ACC Network. Saturday's contest will be the first of Clemson's five games in the month of November, the ninth fivegame November in Clemson history. Clemson recorded a winning record in each of its four most recent fivegame Novembers, including 4-1 records in the month in 1957, 1958 and 2008, and a 3-2 November record in 2024. Clemson is 33-6 in November games since 2015, tied for the third-best November winning percentage in the nation in that span.

  • Kickoff: Saturday, Nov. 1, 12:00 p.m.
  • TV: ACC Network (Wes Durham, Steve Addazio, Dana Boyle)
  • Radio: Clemson Athletic Network (Don Munson, Tim Bourret, Reggie Merriweather)
  • Venue: Memorial Stadium (Clemson, S.C.)

Storylines:

Clemson has won 15 straight home games against Duke, dating to Cliff Austin rushing for a then-school record 260 yards in a 49-14 home win against the Blue Devils in 1982. Clemson's current 15-game streak against Duke is tied for its fourth-longest home winning streak against a single opponent in school history.

Clemson starting quarterback Cade Klubnik is expected to return after battling a lingering ankle injury, which kept him out two weeks ago in the Tigers’ home loss to SMU. Backup Christopher Vizzina played well in his debut, throwing for 317 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs topped the Tigers 35-24.

Fun Fact:

Saturday will be Clemson’s 101st Homecoming game on record since the first celebration in 1922. Clemson has an overall record of 78-19-3 in its previous 100 Homecoming games. That includes a 47-4-2 record (.906) in Homecoming games since the 1971 season.

Though the university tradition began in 1914, the first dedicated homecoming football game at Clemson was in 1922, a 21-0 loss to Centre that kicked off an 0-4-1 stretch through Clemson’s first five homecoming games. Clemson defeated Auburn in 1927 by a 3-0 score for its first homecoming victory.

There is no record of a homecoming game in 1930 or 1938, but the event was held in conjunction with a football game in 81 straight seasons from 1939-2019, even through the war years. That streak ended in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Clemson from hosting the annual event.

Series History:

  • OVERALL: Clemson leads series, 37-17-1
  • LAST MEETING: Sept. 4, 2023 (28–7, L at Durham, NC)
  • STREAK: Duke, Won 1

Swinney accounts for three of Clemson's 37 all-time wins against Duke, as the Tigers lead the series between two of the ACC's charter members by a 37-17- 1 margin. The series has tilted heavily in favor of the Tigers in games played in Clemson; the Tigers are 20- 4-1 all-time in home games against Duke. Clemson's .820 winning percentage at home against Duke is its third-best against an FBS opponent (min. 10 games), trailing its .865 mark against Virginia (22-3-1) and its .854 percentage against Wake Forest (41-7).

Swanny’s Rant & Reality Check:

“That said, even with Klubnik available, there are too many unknowns. His health. The offensive line. The defense’s consistency. All of it adds up to a season that’s felt like one long exercise in frustration. Clemson fans are used to knowing how this team will play — disciplined, physical, relentless — but this year’s version has been anything but. They’ve struggled to cash in on scoring chances, failed to flip momentum with takeaways, and looked unsure of themselves far too often. The effort just hasn’t matched the talent. Until that changes, Clemson isn’t beating anyone on name alone. This group must decide whether it wants to play — because Duke, under Manny Diaz, certainly will.”

Keys to Victory:

1. Passing Game Attack: The Blue Devils have been aggressive up front but vulnerable on the back end. They rank near the bottom of the FBS in pass defense, allowing roughly 246 yards per game through the air. Whether it’s Klubnik or Vizzina, Clemson has to test Duke’s corners and safeties early. Play-action shots, intermediate drags, and tight end seams should be there if protection holds. This is where Garrett Riley needs to let his quarterbacks rip.

2. Create Turnovers — Don’t Wait for Them: Defensive coordinator Tom Allen preaches takeaways, not turnovers, and his group has to make that message real. Clemson has forced just six through seven games, a startling stat for a defense built on speed and aggression. Duke’s offense thrives on rhythm — quick throws, motion, and RPO timing — so disrupting that rhythm with a strip sack or interception could change the game’s complexion. If Clemson wins the turnover margin, they’ll have a chance deep into the fourth quarter.

3. Don’t Vacate the Ground Game: Brent Key’s line from Georgia Tech still echoes: “Run the ball.” Clemson’s 35 rushing yards against SMU were embarrassing. Converted wideout Adam Randall may now be RB1, but this must be the week C.J. Spiller’s group delivers. Establishing the run helps the offensive line settle, keeps Duke’s pass rush honest, and sets up play-action opportunities. If Clemson finishes under 100 yards again, it’s hard to imagine a winning formula.

Prediction:

Last week against SMU, I went against my better judgment and decided to trust that Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers could overcome adversity even with their starting quarterback out, and I was wrong. The Tigers were let down at almost every position except quarterback, which says a lot about this team.

Swinney always says it’s not “who you play, it’s how you play,” and he’s right. The problem is I haven’t seen a Clemson team that “wants to play,” and that’s a bigger issue.

I’ve flagged EFFORT as the biggest issue this team has had all season, and I think you see that again today.

The Pick: Duke 31, Clemson 23

Season Record: 3-4
