A legal fight over whether former professional athletes can return to college sports has moved directly into Clemson’s season opener against LSU.
A Louisiana judge amended a temporary restraining order Saturday to specifically include the Southeastern Conference and commissioner Greg Sankey, potentially complicating the league’s attempt to prevent former professional players from returning to SEC competition.
Among the players affected are former Ole Miss standouts Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, who have been seeking to join Lane Kiffin’s LSU roster. Reuters reported that another former pro hopeful, Jack Pyburn, could also be impacted.
The timing is significant for Clemson, which LSU hosts on Sept. 5.
But even if the legal path clears for Wright, Harris, or others, their ability to actually contribute against Clemson involves more than a court ruling.
Enrollment and administrative eligibility are part of the equation, and NCAA football acclimatization rules could also become significant.
NCAA legislation requires players who arrive after the start of preseason practice or begin practicing at another point during the season to complete a seven-day acclimatization period. That progression limits equipment and practice activity during the early days before allowing full-pad work.
That leaves a remarkably small window before Clemson and LSU face off.
For defensive players, filling a spot doesn’t seem as significant in terms of play calls and preparation but on offense it’s a different story.
However, Wright previously played for Kiffin at Ole Miss, where Charlie Weis Jr. served as offensive coordinator. Weis followed Kiffin to LSU and remains his offensive coordinator and play-caller.
That familiarity could shorten Wright’s learning curve considerably, even if his time practicing with LSU is limited.
Still, what happens against Clemson may ultimately be only the immediate subplot.
The larger issue is whether college football is approaching another fundamental shift in the definition of eligibility.
The SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12 have all moved to prevent former professional athletes from returning to college competition. The ACC unanimously adopted its own policy Thursday barring athletes who had signed professional contracts, appeared on professional rosters or entered drafts without properly preserving their collegiate eligibility. The conference said the move was intended to maintain a clear distinction between college and professional athletics.
Those policies are now colliding with court challenges.
If athletes who still possess unused collegiate eligibility are ultimately able to sign professional contracts, spend time in the NFL, even if it is just the preseason, and then return to college football, the ramifications would extend well beyond LSU’s 2026 roster.
Transfer rules, NIL, revenue sharing and expanded player movement have already dramatically changed roster construction. A pathway from college football to the NFL and potentially back again would represent another major alteration to a system that has changed almost continuously in recent years.
For Clemson, the immediate question is whether any of LSU’s potential late can be ready by kickoff if nothing changes. For now, that doesn’t seem likely.
However, for college football, the much larger question is whether the traditional line separating the college and professional games is beginning to disappear.
