From Favorite to Double-Digit Underdog: Clemson Faces a Different LSU Challenge
A year ago, Clemson welcomed LSU to Death Valley as the favorite in one of college football's marquee season-opening matchups. Now, the Tigers will head to Baton Rouge in a much different position.
Clemson enters game week as roughly a 10.5-point underdog for Saturday night's rematch at LSU, a dramatic swing from last season when Clemson closed as a favorite of around 4.5 points at home.
The change amounts to a roughly 15-point year-over-year shift in the betting market.
The current line isn't a late reaction to preseason camp, either. LSU opened as approximately a 10.5-point favorite in early betting markets months ago, and that number has largely held heading into game week.
Unlike last season, Clemson will be the one walking into one of college football's most difficult road environments.
Saturday will also mark Lane Kiffin's debut as LSU's head coach, with ESPN's College GameDay in Baton Rouge for the occasion, in the midst of its 500th road show.
For Clemson, last year's meeting offers a clear picture of what has to change, as the final offensive numbers were even more troubling than the seven-point margin.
Clemson managed only 261 total yards, 31 rushing yards and 13 first downs. The Tigers averaged just 1.6 yards per rushing attempt. That performance proved to be an early warning for an offense that struggled to find consistency during Clemson's eventual 7-6 season.
Now Clemson gets another shot at LSU, but almost everything surrounding the matchup has changed for both teams.
Clemson enters 2026 with Chad Morris directing the offense and a quarterback room led by Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds. Whoever takes the first snap in Baton Rouge will face an assignment substantially different from the one Clemson encountered at home last season.
LSU enters the season ranked No. 13 in the Coaches Poll, compared to Clemson at No. 23. In the AP Poll, the Bayou Bengals are No. 11 and Swinney’s group is outside the Top 25.
Oddsmakers have accounted for that difference and then some.
Clemson couldn't take advantage of being favored against LSU a year ago. Now the Tigers have an opportunity to flip the script as a sizable underdog.
The Tigers have been double-digit underdogs only twice in the last ten years, with lines ranging from +11.5 to +13.5 bookending the 2024 season, against Georgia in the opener and in the CFB Playoff at Texas.
Depending on where the line settles by kickoff, this matchup sits right on the threshold of potentially becoming Clemson's third double-digit underdog spread in the past 28 games.
