Dabo Swinney doesn't see much room for error Saturday night.
No. 4 Miami comes to Death Valley to face a team unbeaten in ACC play, with an offense Swinney described Tuesday as looking “like a video game” and a defense among the nation's best.
For Clemson, the challenge is fairly straightforward.
“We got to play our best game to this point in the season,” Swinney said. “If we show up with our B game or our C game, it’s going to be a long night.”
Swinney spent much of his Tuesday press conference detailing the problems Miami presents on both sides of the ball.
He praised the Hurricanes' physicality up front, running game, receivers, and quarterback while pointing to a defense capable of creating pressure without sacrificing athleticism on the back end.
“There’s really not any weaknesses within their team,” Swinney said. “Not often that you get a top-five team coming into the Valley.”
That puts an emphasis on the areas Clemson can control.
Swinney's blueprint started with avoiding the type of self-inflicted mistakes that can change a game against an opponent of Miami's caliber. He pointed to missed assignments, pre-snap penalties and turnovers as mistakes Clemson simply can't afford Saturday.
“This is a game where you don't have a big margin for error,” Swinney said. “So we've got to do the things that winning requires.”
At the top of that list is protecting the football.
“We've got to win the turnover margin,” Swinney said. “I mean, if you don't win that in a game like this, you ain't winning. It's all about the ball.”
Additionally, Clemson also has to create explosive plays while limiting Miami's opportunities to do the same.
Swinney expects the Hurricanes to make plays. The challenge is preventing one mistake from becoming a touchdown while finding enough favorable matchups for Clemson's own playmakers to change the game.
“Your dudes have to be dudes,” Swinney said. “We’ve got good players, too, and so we got to win matchups.”
That message extends to special teams, where Swinney said Clemson needs to “make a difference” somewhere during the game.
Then there are the penalties.
Clemson has improved in that area since Swinney described the Tigers' performance against Georgia Southern as “terrible,” but he remained frustrated by mistakes that occur before the snap or after the whistle.
“Those are penalties that get you beat,” Swinney said.
Defensively, Swinney repeatedly praised the Hurricanes' quarterback for his accuracy, poise, and ability to recognize what a defense is attempting to do. That makes Clemson's communication particularly important. One blown assignment could turn an otherwise routine completion into an explosive play.
“If you bust, he's going to make you pay,” Swinney said. “You better have 11 guys all on the same page doing their job.”
The expectation isn't necessarily perfection. Swinney's message was that Clemson has to remain within striking distance long enough for the game to be decided late.
“You’ve got to hang in there, and you got to give yourself a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter,” Swinney said. “This is a four-quarter game.”
Clemson has spent the opening month of the season building toward an opportunity like this.
Now a top-five opponent is coming to Death Valley, and Swinney believes the Tigers know what Saturday night will require.
“We’ve got a good football team, too,” Swinney said. “But every play is the biggest play of the game.”
