Much of the criticism surrounding Clemson's struggling offense has centered on true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, the offensive line, and the play-calling of coordinator Chad Morris. But head coach Dabo Swinney identified another problem that contributed to the Tigers' 20-16 home loss to Virginia Tech.

Sophomore running back Gideon Davidson, despite leading Clemson in rushing, has struggled with missed assignments and costly decisions.

"He really hurt us," Swinney said of Davidson. "I mean, the first third-and-one. He actually got it, but it should have been about a 20-yard gain. If he beats the safety, he might score. He's kind of feast or famine, and that's where he's got to grow up."

Clemson ranks 115th nationally in total offense after opening the season with just 145 yards, including 40 rushing, against LSU. However, the ground game has climbed to 78th nationally, led by Davidson's 492 rushing yards, five touchdowns and 5.3 yards per carry.

But those numbers haven't told the entire story.

"I love Gid. I think he's a special talent, but he's a maturing player still, and he just sometimes gets his eyes all over the place," added Swinney. "He's just trying to do too much. If he'll just trust and do his job, it's there. And when he hits his big plays, that's what happens."

Davidson finished with 62 yards on 14 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per attempt against the Hokies, but a few mistakes proved costly.

Clemson running back Gideon Davidson (8) battles through Virginia Tech defenders during the Tigers' 20-16 loss to the Hokies at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C., on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.

Swinney pointed to a third-and-1 late in the first half when Clemson had nearly 50 seconds remaining and a timeout. Instead of following a clear running lane that could have helped position the Tigers for a field goal, Davidson cut back into an unblocked defender, forcing a punt.

Swinney also revealed that Davidson was responsible for two of the four sacks allowed against Virginia Tech. The mistakes cost him some carries in the second half.

Could they eventually cost him his starting job?

"Absolutely. You got to do your job. We got to do the job. That's what we're here to do. And when it's there, then you got to give somebody else an opportunity."

Swinney believes competition in the backfield could help Davidson improve, expressing confidence that the former Liberty Christian Academy standout will respond to the challenge.

Despite the criticism, Swinney praised Davidson's commitment and acknowledged that the mistakes are part of his development.

"But the best thing about Gid is there ain't nobody that cares more than that kid. So, that's why I know he'll get it. So those are some growing pains that we're going through with some really talented players."

Davidson's production has established him as the team's leading rusher, but his continued role will depend on more than yardage.

As Swinney made clear, talent and effort must be accompanied by execution, or someone else could get the opportunity.
