Draft him today: Trevor Lawrence is the most "can't miss" prospect

Trevor Lawrence set the college football world on fire with his performance as a freshman in the College Football Playoff. Clemson fans knew what they were getting by the end of the season when No. 16 stepped onto the field, but it wasn’t until his games against Notre Dame and Alabama where people really took a step back.

After Clemson’s 30-3 win over the Fighting Irish, it became apparent that Lawrence was in fact the real deal. He rose to the pressures of the biggest stage he had faced so far, and did so in a stoic manner.

“That kid cannot be 19 years old,” ESPN’s Chris Fowler said on the championship broadcast to Kirk Herbstreit with a laugh. “That looks like a 10-year NFL veteran.”

The performance would eventually be one-upped when Lawrence took down the Crimson Tide in the national championship. The freshman completed 20 of 32 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Zero interceptions. His QBR? 97.8, his highest of the season.

Lawrence became just the second quarterback, as a true freshman, to lead his team to the national championship in the history of college football. During Clemson’s throttling of Alabama 44-16, Lawrence looked like the best player on the field.

The consensus, after Lawrence rocked college football’s world, was that he would be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft tomorrow if he were eligible. But Lawrence has two more years under center for Dabo Swinney.

With so much time left before that draft day comes, some have wondered if Lawrence should sit out, turn pro, and take the money and run.

Lawrence put those conversations to rest after a recent interview with ESPN’s David Hale.

"Sitting out bowl games and stuff, that'll never be me," Lawrence said in the interview. "You won't have to worry about writing those stories."

With Lawrence at the controls, and a powerful offense around him, it doesn’t seem like Lawrence would play in any postseason game less than a College Football Playoff game. But if the Tigers were to slip up and end the season in a New Year’s Six bowl game or something of that nature, we’d have to see if Lawrence will stick to his guns.

During our two-hour daily radio show Clemson Sports Talk, Lawton Swann recently discussed Lawrence possibly being the most “can’t miss prospect” he’s seen this early in a college career.

Given his 6-foot-6 frame, incredible arm, and his ability to digest what the defense is giving him, Lawton might be on to something.

Others have even started debating if Lawrence is the best player to ever wear the orange and white. It’s hard to believe that is an actual conversation that Tiger fans are having, but even with a very small sample size, it’s hard not to engage in the debate.

Lawrence threw for 30 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards after missing most of his first five games. What will his next two years have in store?

The signal caller from Cartersville, Georgia seems to be just getting started and the 2019 squad appears to be deeper at wideout than perhaps any Clemson team on record.

It sure doesn’t seem like he’s about to take his foot off the pedal.
