No. 19 Clemson Hosts UNC Greensboro for First Friday Action

Clemson, S.C. – The No. 19 Clemson men’s soccer team looks to extend their impressive streak of play against UNC Greensboro on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m., under the lights of Historic Riggs Field. The matchup, which is held in conjunction with First Friday festivities, will be the third of four home games the squad has to open the season. 

The first two games of the season have seen Clemson score 12 goals off of 50 shots, with 28 being on goal. Nine different players have registered a goal for the Tigers this season, with Grayson Barber and Kimarni Smith being the only two players with multiple scores. Grayson Barber leads the team with seven points, earned off three goals and one assist, while Tanner Dieterich leads the team with four assists. 

To begin First Friday action, the No. 19 Clemson women’s soccer team will take to Historic Riggs Field to face the Oregon Ducks at 5 p.m. Tickets for the men’s match will also gain fans entrance to the women’s match, with tickets beginning to be scanned at 6 p.m. Fans will not have to clear the stadium at the conclusion of the women’s match.

Series Notes:

·      Friday night’s match will be the tenth meeting between the two sides. Clemson leads the series with a 7-2 record. 

·      The teams first played in 1982, with the Tigers winning, 2-0.

·      The last time the two teams met was in 2013, where the Tigers won at home, 2-0.

·      Head coach Mike Noonan is 2-0 against the Spartans during his tenure at Clemson.

·      The Tigers have outscored the Spartans, 18-7, over the series.

·      Clemson has played the Spartans five times while being ranked within the Top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches poll, winning each time.

Clemson Notes:

·      Clemson enters the match riding a two-game win streak to start the season, outscoring opponents by a 12-0 margin.

·      25 different players have seen playing time during the first two matches (22 field, 3 goalies).

·      Malick Mbaye leads the team with 172 minutes played.

·      George Marks has a 2-0 record in net, logging 45 shut-out minutes during the Tigers’ match against Detroit Mercy.

·      Last match’s 8-0 score line was the first time the Tigers have scored eight goals in a game since Aug. 31, 2006. 

·      The previous record for most goals scored in a season under Mike Noonan was six, which had been accomplished three times.

·      The eight different goal scorers in a single match is the most since the stat began being tracked in 1998.

·      The 13 assists recorded in Monday’s match are the most in program history, breaking the previous record of 12, set back on Sept. 1, 1989. 

 

UNC Greensboro Notes: 

·      UNC Greensboro enters Friday’s match with a 1-1 record, defeating George Washington 2-0 at home in their season opener. The team lost in overtime at Radford on Monday, 3-4.

·      The head coach for the Spartans, Chris Rich, is in his first season at the helm of the program, joining after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Duke.

·      UNCG is lead in scoring by Micah Albert, who has two goals.

·      UNCG has accumulated 13 points over their first two games.

·      Ricky Zarri, a redshirt sophomore in goal for the Spartans, has allowed four goals and provided 13 saves over two games.
