The College Football Playoff Committee takes game control into account as much as anything when evaluating the top teams in America. If they flip on the tape from the Boston College game, the Tigers will get high praise.
Under Death Valley’s lights, Clemson put on an offensive display racking up 674 yards in a 59-7 win over Boston College. The Tiger defense also did their part helping stifle an Eagle offense throughout the game yielding just 177 total yards.
Clemson’s offense is typically very balanced, and that was the same tonight as the Tigers put up 372 yards through the air and 302 yards on the ground.
The Tigers were led on the ground by Travis Etienne, who had his third consecutive 100+ yards performance with 109 yards and three touchdowns. Diondre Overton had a big game putting all three of his receptions into the endzone and finishing with 119 yards.
The game was over when…
Early in the contest, after Travis Etienne scored from three yards out to give Clemson a 10-0 lead, it felt like the game was already teetering on the brink of being a blowout. The Tigers were controlling the line of scrimmage, and Boston College was struggling to move the football.
On Clemson’s third drive, Trevor Lawrence found Tee Higgins for 21 yards before Etienne ripped off a 32-yard run putting Clemson near the red zone at the 22-yard line. On the next play, Lawrence found Diondre Overton for a touchdown, completing the 75-yard drive, and breaking the game open 17-0.
Boston College narrowed the gap back to 17-7, but from that point forward, the Tigers were in control of the contest.
They stole the show…
As good as he has been during his career, you can’t help but imagine what it must feel like for Trevor Lawrence to put his head down tonight after a stellar performance. The sophomore completed 16-of-19 passes for 275 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Since slicing and dicing Notre Dame and Alabama a year ago in the College Football Playoff, every incompletion and interception that Lawrence has thrown has been dissected thoroughly.
Lawrence, always a cool customer, has taken the criticism in stride, and even though he’s had to feel the pressure, you’d never know it.
Watching his command of the offense tonight showed a few things that have to make others very nervous about seeing him on the schedule this season. His head-scratching mistakes were cleaned up, and on several occasions where he might have tried to force a ball in previously, Lawrence simply pulled the football and ran for the available yardage.
Matchup of the game…
Diondre Overton hauled in three receptions and took each touch to the house against the Eagles’ defense. The senior from Greensboro, NC, entered the game with just seven receptions for 72 yards with no touchdowns this season.
Against Boston College, Overton put together a career night with three receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns, averaging nearly 40 yards per catch.
Anyone who has watched Overton during his time at Clemson couldn’t help but be excited for a kid who has put in the time and finally had his chance to shine.
During the contest, 13 Clemson wideouts brought in 25 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns.
The Tigers take on Wofford next Saturday in Death Valley at 4:00 PM.
