The Clemson basketball program got some unwelcome news earlier today as rising senior forward Aamir Simms declared for the NBA Draft on his Twitter account. Simms, who was projected to be a leader on the team during the upcoming season, will instead seek an opportunity in the NBA.

With the current rules in place, Simms could still return to Clemson for his final season with the Tigers as long as he doesn’t sign with an agent.

Simms was Clemson’s leading scorer (13.0 PPG) this past season and also lead the Tigers in rebounds (7.2 RPG). His versatility was expected to be a valuable part of Brad Brownell’s club in the 2020-2021 season.

Earlier this season, Simms’ career-high 25 points helped the Tigers knock off then No. 3 Duke 79-72 in Littlejohn Coliseum. That victory became one of four signature wins for Clemson during this past season as the Tigers also beat No. 5 Louisville and No. 6 FSU, in addition to winning against North Carolina in Chapel Hill for the first time in program history.
