The Storylines

Clemson’s 2020 home opener will look different than any other home opener in the history of Clemson football as only 19,000 fans will be allowed inside Death Valley due to restrictions in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. You can review all of the precautions the Clemson athletic department is taking here.

On the field, Clemson welcomes the Military College of South Carolina, The Citadel to Death Valley for the home opener. Dabo Swinney’s Tigers are riding a 22-game home winning streak with a record of 41-1 since 2014. Saturday afternoon’s contest marks 78 years to the date since the first football game inside Memorial Stadium, when Clemson hosted in-state FCS school, Presybterian College on Sept. 19, 1942. Clemson won 32-13.

Saturday’s contest could also be a record setting day for running back Travis Etienne. Etienne has scored a touchdown in 37 of his 44 career games, which is an ACC record. With a touchdown on Saturday, the senior from Jennings, La. would tie Florida’s Tim Tebow and Lousiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon for the FBS record in that category.

Saturday also marks the home debut for nine players on the Clemson defense who made their first career start last week, most notable of those being freshman defensive end Myles Murphy and freshman defensive linemen Bryan Bresee.

Clemson is up 49-0 at halftime. The 49 points are the most Clemson has scored in a half since 2006.

The Citadel coach Brent Thompson chose not to go with the running clock but Dabo Swinney did so no running clock in the second half.

Can't blame The Citadel about the clock though, they only play 4 games this year. Might as well get every second out of the season.

Clemson tries the speed option with D.J. on 4th and 2 and the freshman tried to pitch it but the Citadel recovered it and will take over. The first drive that doesn't end with points all day outside of the drive right before the half.

Tigers getting a little sloppy on offense with the Mikey Dukes fumble but The Citadel gets nothing out of it. Still 49-0 Clemson.

That extra drive in the first have for TL16 with the slant and go to Ladson gave me the impression they want TL to have a chance at the Hiesman. Really liked the offensive play calling again today. That offense is so efficient and explosive

I think the only nit pick Dabo Swinney will have with this game is the performance of the second and third string offense. No points so far here in the second half.

While I know it's not a huge deal today, you don't know when you'll need these guys especially with the COVID protocol.

Some quick postgame thoughts: Overall, just a dominant and complete performance where you got a lot of guys an opportunity to play -- I believe Clemson played the entire roster. And the most important thing, no one got hurt. On defense, I was really impressed by the young guys on defense today like Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee and Demonte Capehart.

To get a shutout on defense against a team like The Citadel who is a team that has put up points against Georgia Tech, Alabama and South Carolina, that's impressive -- I don't care who you play.

A quick thought on offense besides the first string putting on a show: if Frank Ladson can become more of a downfield threat to go along with Amari Rodgers, look out moving forward. The backups will definitely need to keep working and getting better but it was definitely good to see them and now the coaches can teach off of the film.

So the Tigers are still No.1 and looked great early. Love this team. These guys are talented to say the least.
