The Storylines

Clemson returns from the first of two BYE weeks built into the revised 2020 schedule to host the Virginia Cavaliers in a rematch of the 2019 ACC Championship Game this evening in Death Valley. Tonight’s contest will be the first of four home games for the Tigers in the month of October.

Travis Etienne enters tonight’s game with his 13-game streak of scoring a touchdown snapped after not scoring a touchdown in their 49-0 win against The Citadel two weeks ago. The last time he was held scoreless was against Syracuse on Sept. 14, 2019. The senior from Jennings, La., is still seeking to still looking to tie Florida’s Tim Tebow and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon for the FBS record with a touchdown of any kind this evening.

Clemson is coming off their first shutout since the 2016 Fiesta Bowl win over Ohio State with a win over The Citadel. Brent Venables’ group has been impressive so far against the run this year, holding the opposition to 1.50 yards per carry, which is the third-fewest in the country.

The opening drive for the Tigers aided by the big return from Lyn-J Dixon stalls out a bit but B.T. Potter knocks through the field goal to put Clemson on the board first at 3-0.

Virginia burns their second timeout of the first half here in the early going. Wahoos have a solid opening drive going here with two third down conversions, we'll see how this drive ends.

Here on Clemson's 2nd series -- Lawrence was trying to get rid of it and should've just taken the sack with the safety coming on the blitz. Intentional grounding penalty and it will be 3rd and 16 coming out of the timeout

What a great job in strength and agility from Travis Etienne as he gets in the end zone for Clemson's first touchdown of the evening. It's 10-0 Clemson and there are 22 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Brennan Armstrong got the passing game going on that drive and led the Wahoos on a solid drive to get them on the board. It's 10-3 Clemson with 9:38 to go before the break.

The leap to get over the safety on the run gets Amari Rodgers his second touchdown of the evening and just like that Clemson is up three touchdowns. It's 24-3 Clemson.

Two incredible throws from Brennan Armstrong and Virginia gets on the board from Terrell Jana on a drive that lasted 4 plays in 38 seconds. Impressive drive from UVA right before the half, and they will get the ball to start the second half.

It's now 24-10 Clemson.

Momentum on the side of the Wahoos as we head into halftime in an interesting game so far in Death Valley. I knew UVA would give Clemson a game for sure. Clemson is up 24-10. I will be very interested to see how the starters will play in the second half in a game that's competitive unlike the first two ball games.

UVA tried to connect with Lavel Davis, Jr., the freshman out of Fort Dorchester for the second straight throw but Andrew Booth picks it off with a one handed INT, ending what was a promising UVA drive.

I think Amari Rodgers made an unbelievable catch right there and I'm surprised that they didn't stop play and look at it. Nonetheless, Clemson gets points off of the Virginia turnover as the Tigers extend the lead to 27-10 with the B.T. Potter field goal.

I've been impressed with Potter so far this year, as a side note.

Keyaton Thompson, who is listed as Virginia's backup quarterback, catches what is essentially the throwback pass and no one on the Clemson defense picked him up. UVA is hanging around in Death Valley with another impressive drive. Clemson is up 27-17 with 6:05 in the third quarter.
