The Storylines

Clemson returns from the first of two BYE weeks built into the revised 2020 schedule to host the Virginia Cavaliers in a rematch of the 2019 ACC Championship Game this evening in Death Valley. Tonight’s contest will be the first of four home games for the Tigers in the month of October.

Travis Etienne enters tonight’s game with his 13-game streak of scoring a touchdown snapped after not scoring a touchdown in their 49-0 win against The Citadel two weeks ago. The last time he was held scoreless was against Syracuse on Sept. 14, 2019. The senior from Jennings, La., is still seeking to still looking to tie Florida’s Tim Tebow and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon for the FBS record with a touchdown of any kind this evening.

Clemson is coming off their first shutout since the 2016 Fiesta Bowl win over Ohio State with a win over The Citadel. Brent Venables’ group has been impressive so far against the run this year, holding the opposition to 1.50 yards per carry, which is the third-fewest in the country.

Hmmm... I wouldn't say significant issues. I think it's more of guys not winning one-on-one battles against the size of UVA's skill guys. I will say Clemson's defense is being tested for the first time in a significant way this year.

Clemson's offense with an important response after the UVA touchdown wrapping up the drive with a 4-yard receiving TD from Travis Etienne. Tigers putting some distance back in between them and Virginia, up 34-17.

Clemson would've converted another 3rd down and long but Lyn-J Dixon dropped the ball. UVa will get the ball back down 34-17 with 13:31 left in the game.

Lannden Zanders denies Virginia on the 4th down attempt and Clemson will take over looking to put the game out of reach here with a score up 34-17 with 8:34 left in the game.

Chez Mellusi punches it in effectively putting this one away ending the 7-play, 74-yard drive. Clemson is up 41-17 with under 5 1/2 minutes to play in the contest.

Virginia scores late to keep the score respectable at 41-23 with 1:11 to go in the game. Dabo Swinney and Brent Venables won't be happy about the late score.

Some quick postgame thoughts:
Offensively, a slow start coming out of the game coming off the BYE week but you saw them get into a rhythm with Trevor Lawrence and Amari Rodgers connecting for two scores. I thought Travis Etienne was impressive catching the ball out of the backfield with 5 catches for 114 yards. He was second on the team in catches on the night.

I thought it was critical to see this offense play in the second half and I think it will pay dividends moving forward, especially with Miami on the horizon next week.

Defensively, I thought it was another solid outing and a good test for Clemson's secondary against the tall, lengthy skill guys from UVA. They gave the Tigers a good measuring stick to see where they are and to force 2 turnovers against an offense that put up 417 yards and 23 points, which while it won't make the defensive staff too happy, that's still impressive. When they needed stops, they got it.

We all know what's coming next Saturday night. Clemson hosts Miami in primetime. College GameDay will be in town and this one will be fun.
