The Storylines

The news came out following Clemson’s 34-28 win over Boston College last Saturday that quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not play against Notre Dame. However, Lawrence did make the trip to South Bend and will be on the sideline this evening.

True freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei will get his second career start against the Fighting Irish on the road tonight after throwing for 342 yards and threw for two touchdowns, which was the third-most by a Clemson freshman in his starting debut, trailing Deshaun Watson’s 435 yards against North Carolina in 2014 and Charlie Whitehurst’s 420 yards against Duke in 2002.

Tonight’s contest between the Tigers and Fighting Irish is the highest-ranked matchup in ACC history. The last highest combined ranking for a game between two ACC teams was eight, set five times including most recently on Oct. 10 in No. 1 Clemson’s 42-17 win over No. 7 Miami.

Clemson running back Travis Etienne, the ACC’s all-time leading rusher will face a Notre Dame defense that ranks No. 8 in the country, only allowing 93.7 yards a contest.

Bryan Bresee and Sheridan Jones got caught up in a collision with each other and are down. This BYE week next week is going to be so critical for this Clemson defense.

Kyren Williams punches it in and mauls the right side of the defensive line for a 3-yard TD run. It's 47-40 Notre Dame. Clemson needs to score and kick the extra point to keep the game rolling.

No. 1 Clemson falls to No. 4 Notre Dame, 47-40 and it's their first regular season loss since October 2017 against Syracuse. Their 39-game regular season streak comes to an end.

This game was an instant classic and it's likely you will see these two teams play again in a rematch in Charlotte in the ACC Championship.

That's a tough loss, but man...the future is bright. There are some young studs on this Clemson team. Believe that.

Quick postgame thoughts
  • They say that all good things must come to an end. Clemson's 50-game Saturday win streak and 39-game regular season streak comes to an end at the hands of the No. 4 team in Notre Dame. What an unbelievable football game.
  • DJU put on a show and threw for 439 yards and 2 touchdowns and I was really impressed with Cornell Powell tonight and last week -- he had 161 yards receiving. Clemson was never able to get the run game really going as they only rushed for 41 yards tonight so I think that will be a focal point in the BYE week.
  • On defense: These guys have got to get healthy during the bye week. You could definitely tell the Tigers missed Skalski, Tyler Davis and Mike Jones tonight. Despite all of that, the Tigers still made some critical stops down near the goal line and that was impressive to see. But you have to give Notre Dame credit for executing their plan well. They had 519 yards of total offense and had their way against Brent Venables' group.
  • Overall - This was an incredible game and you just hate to see someone have to lose it. Like I said, you will likely see these two teams play again in Charlotte in the ACC Title. For Clemson, it's win out, win the ACC Title and you're in the Playoff.

I gotta say: This is probably the least disappointed I've ever been after a loss.

CU took their 2nd string offense and 2nd string defense and took ND to 2OT and hung 40 points.

Can't hang their heads after that.

That's exactly right, Brady. A true freshman QB puts on a show on the road against the No. 4 team in the country? That's incredible.
