The Storylines

Saturday’s ACC Championship Game is the biggest game in the history of the conference in recent memory because it’s two of the top four teams in the country meeting not only for a conference title, but for spots in the College Football Playoff. 

For Clemson, a win this afternoon would mean a sixth consecutive conference title and birth in the College Football Playoff. Both teams are led by their programs’ respective winningest starting quarterbacks: Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Notre Dame’s Ian Book. Lawrence is 33-1, with his lone loss coming to LSU in the National Championship Game to end the 2019 season and Book is 30-3, with one of those losses coming in the College Football Playoff Semifinal in 2018 to Clemson when Lawrence was a freshman.

Northwestern needs to stop with the gimmick plays and just go at it. That 9-yard loss a few minutes ago cost them three points, if not more....Wildcats now trail Ohio State 13-10 with 2:41 left in Q3.

Welp...Ohio State gets it done, but that wasn't exactly a spectacular performance. The argument for Clemson in the CFB PLayoff continues to get better in my opinion.

Kyle Hamilton picks off Trevor Lawrence -- Irish checked out of what they had originally called and fooled the Cartersville native. Tigers had a solid drive going but it ends with a turnover. Can't have that today. 5:20 to go in the first, Irish up 3-0.

Notre Dame's Jonathan Doerer, who made a 51-yard field goal to open the scoring, misses a chip shot field goal and Clemson dodges an early bullet following the turnover. Bryan Bresee made an incredible play shooting the gap on a Kyren Williams run that the other guys were able to clean up on that drive.

Let's see what the Tigers can do on their second series. 1:42 to go in the first quarter

And just like that... Amari Rodgers and Lawrence connect on the long bomb. Once he got past the safety, it was a wrap. That's a 67-yard touchdown reception and Clemson leads 7-3 with 41 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Davis Allen did a great job right there of opening up the void in the coverage and the freshman E.J. Williams catches the Lawrence pass for a 33-yard TD and the Tigers lead 14-3 with 9:24 left to go in the 2nd quarter. The Irish have missed opportunities, and Clemson is simply taking advantage of it today.

Back to back sacks for the Tiger defense -- one by K.J. Henry and the other by Derion Kendrick and Notre Dame is forced to punt. One of the things that was talked about with the buildup to the game was keeping Book in the pocket and they did a great job of doing that on the drive. Clemson leads 14-3 with 7:05 to play before the half.

Clemson's offense since the early interception has been clicking on all cylinders and they almost scored again on the slant from E.J. Williams, but they have to settle for a 27-yard field goal and it's 17-3 Tigers with 4:28 to go before the half.

What a drive from Clemson -- 88 yards in less than 2 minutes and Travis Etienne caps it off on 4th and 1 with a 44 yard TD run. We've been waiting for Travis to spring open and this game could be the one. Clemson has scored 24 unanswered points and it's 24-3 Clemson at the half.

Clemson dominated the 2nd quarter with 228 yards of offense to the Irish's 49 yards.

Admittedly I've given him grief as well. Especially with drives like our first one trying to force the screens. He shut me up after that though. He is smarter than we give him credit for sometimes. Those "feeling out" drives to see what the defense does really sets up the deep shots Trevor is so good at.

That was an incredible catch by E.J. Williams that should stand. The freshman is having a solid afternoon with 3 catches for 70 yards and the one touchdown earlier.

Trevor Lawrence's legs have been a big factor today and that keeper pretty much sums up the day right there. That's a 34-yard touchdown run and Clemson is running away with this one up 31-3 with 3:43 to play in the third quarter.
