Venables on the coaching carousel: 'What we have at Clemson is not the norm.'

Earlier tonight the media had a chance to meet with the Clemson's assistant coaches and get their thoughts on the recent coaching carousel and the Clemson's upcoming game with Alabama. We will have a lot more from the interviews later, but this quote from Brent Venables stuck out.

"I’ve got an incredible job. I work with incredible young people and an incredible staff. What we have at Clemson is not the norm in a profession, let alone college football."
- Brent Venables

Speaking of the rumors that he was a candidate for some of the recent job openings in college football,  Venables stated: "Just like I tell recruits all the time, you are in control of this process, it’s not the other way around. I’ve got an incredible job. I work with incredible young people and an incredible staff.

"What we have at Clemson is not the norm in any profession, let alone college football. The foundation, the alignment, the players, the healthy culture, the consistency, the focus, Coach Swinney, his leadership. He really embraces what we have. He does a good job setting the temperature, letting our guys have fun."

This small statement alone speaks volumes about Venables and his relationship with Dabo Swinney and the type of environment he gets to work in.

His next statement sums up why the staff has such great continuity.

"I’m challenged daily as a husband, a father, a Christian, as a coach. He’s (Swinney) done a great job of surrounding himself with a great staff, good men, good people, talented in their profession but really good at all the other things other than being a coach. Again just real blessed to be a part of that and to be exposed to that.”

On Clemson Sports Talk's daily radio show, I am often asked about Venables and if I think he desires to be a head coach. I've answered the same way every time:

I think Venables is happy in Clemson.

His statements tonight back that up 100 percent.

What's going on at Clemson is not normal in the high-stakes world of college football. It's a pressure-packed profession, but much like Swinney has built consistency for his players on a week-to-week, game-to-game basis, he's also created that type of environment for his coaches. They want to be a part of a great organization.

Could Venables leave for a head coaching gig at some point? Sure, but money isn't everything.

I'll give you two things much more valuable: being happy and enjoying your job.

It sure sounds like Venables has that at Clemson.
