CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson second-year freshman righty Valerie Cagle went the distance to tally her fifth complete game of the season as the Tigers defeated Elon, 3-0, at McWhorter Stadium in game No. 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader. Cagle’s performance marked the first complete game shutout of her career in a seven-inning game. Cagle, who recorded nine strikeouts in Saturday’s win, improved to 5-1 on the season, while Clemson improved to 7-2 overall on the season.

Elon and its starting pitcher Kenna Quinn both fell to 2-1 on the season.

Clemson struck first, breaking the game open in the bottom of the second in the only inning that saw either team score. In the designated hitter spot for Clemson, Abi Stuart launched her first home run of the season on a two-run shot over the right field fence. Then, the Tigers recorded back-to-back hits to put runners on the corners before McKenzie Clark recorded her first career sacrifice fly on a fly ball to right field, allowing Carlee Shannon to tag and score and extend Clemson’s lead to 3-0.

Clemson infielder Cammy Pereira, who entered today’s action with a .348 batting average, continued her strong senior campaign, going 3-for-3 at the plate in Saturday’s victory. Clemson catcher JoJo Hyatt went 2-for-3 in Saturday’s opening contest.

Clark, Pereira and Carlee Shannon recorded one stolen each for the Tigers.v
