Over the weekend, several 2023 Clemson commits posted impressive performances in their high school matchups. We take a look at some notable moments from games across the nation.
Peter Woods tossed a running back: Yes, you read that right. On a 1st & 10 run attempt in the third quarter of Thompson's game against Vestavia Hills, Peter Woods shed a block, lost his helmet, grabbed the running back, and launched him backward. The five-star is a vicious run defender and wreaked havoc in the backfield during Thompson's 34-14 win Friday night.
Fun fact: Woods passed the 50 career TFL milestone earlier this fall. He had 26 last season alone.
Big man touchdown! Ian Reed had a spectacular showing in Vandegrift's (Tex.) victory over Cedar Park (Tex.). The four-star offensive tackle scored his first career touchdown by catching a pass and barreling his way over several Cedar Park defenders for the 2-yard score. Also, he blocked in the Vandegrift offense that put up 472 total yards in a 45-0 win.
Vizzina is the complete package: Friday night, Clemson five-star quarterback commit Christopher Vizzina led Briarwood Christian (Ala.) to a 36-29 win over Chilton County (Ala.). Vizzina passed for 221 yards with two touchdowns and added 97 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground.
While recruiting services classify Vizzina as a pro-style quarterback, he's been impressive as a rusher throughout his career at Briarwood Christian. He rushed for 600 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. This fall, he's shown off the ability to make plays with his legs, picking up 165 yards and four touchdowns in the first three games of the season.
It's hard to believe that Vizzina wasn't even on the Rivals250 list one year ago. Yet, after a stellar junior season, he's enjoyed a meteoric rise to five-star status. He opened up about his mental approach in a postgame interview with Johnny Congdon of ABC 33/40 news, "I'm blessed that people think that highly of me, but ya know, like I said, I'm just a senior; I'm just living in the moment."
Luke's Take:
I cannot wait to see Peter Woods in Death Valley. Every week, his highlights seem to get more impressive. After checking out the tape from his first three games of the season, I quickly realized that the Tigers are getting one of the most explosive run defenders we will see at the high school level. I believe he should be a consensus five-star in the final industry rankings for the 2023 cycle.
