Garrett Riley on recruiting in Texas: 'It's pretty cool to wear the paw'

On implementing his offense at Clemson:

“Early on, there was some familiarity (at TCU) with what we were doing in terms of scheme and some of the coaching-- so that helped. Definitely a fresh start. Change in some terminology and things of that nature, but a lot of things conceptually are the same. It just might be taught a little differently. A different way of thinking-- more than anything. That’s what has been neat so far.”

On how the roster fits his offense:

“Not a big wholesale change up front. Just kind of dumbing it down. It’s more about having an identity and being consistent with what we are doing upfront, at the skill positions, at the quarterback position, that’s probably the biggest difference.”

On the evaluation of talent on offense:

“That’s been the fun part. I get to come in with a clean slate for a lot of guys. Unbiased opinions on people. I get to see it from a different lens. I think, in a way that’s probably refreshing for some of our coaches that have seen these kids every day. They may hear a different opinion or a different voice on some guys that maybe they didn’t think that way in the first place. That part has been great. You get to evaluate what you do have. As you’ve seen, we are repping a lot of guys to get a great sample size.”

On Cade Klubnik learning the new offense:

“I think quickly. We are all about simplicity and making it easy for that guy No. 1. That’s the whole thing. If it’s easy for the quarterback, you are going to reap the benefits of that eventually. He’s grasped it well. I think all of those guys have. They have had a great mentality for learning from Day 1 on that quarterback room, but yeah, Cade specifically, kind of the things he’s done at the high school level and things we did last year it’s just probably doing it more at a higher repetition level.”

On recruiting in Texas as a Clemson coach:

“It’s pretty cool. It’s pretty cool to wear that paw-- there is no doubt. A lot of people in Texas have great respect for this brand and what Clemson’s done over the last decade. I think there is a lot of respect in that state for Clemson. It’s been pretty good outreach since I got here from a lot of Texas high school coaches. I know they are excited for us-- and me and these Texas guys on our roster. We’ve done well recruiting there the last several years, so I think it’s only going to help us have a strong footprint there as we move forward.”
