In this series, we closely examine player stats from last season and decide what we expect to see from each Clemson star in 2023. Some players are easy to judge. For example, Cade Klubnik is certain to have better numbers in 2023, barring any unforeseen injuries. But there are plenty of other players like Will Shipley, Antonio Williams, and Beaux Collins that present a larger challenge to predict in a new offense.

We begin with running back Will Shipley.

Shipley, the talented running back from Weddington, NC, had an impressive campaign last year, amassing 1,182 rushing yards and finding the end zone 15 times on the ground. With the recent addition of Garrett Riley as the offensive coordinator, there are speculations about how Shipley's role will evolve in the upcoming season. While some may predict a decrease in carries and yards, Shipley's versatility and potential for increased involvement in the passing game may lead to an uptick in his overall touchdown production.

Shipley's statistical performance in the previous season showcased his ability to handle a significant workload, with 210 carries. However, with the arrival of Riley, who brings his offensive expertise to the team, it is reasonable to anticipate some adjustments in the offensive strategy. Riley's coaching tenure at TCU saw his top running back in 2022, Kendre Miller, excel with 1,399 rushing yards on 224 carries, accompanied by 17 touchdowns. This success could imply that Riley’s system could bolster Shipley’s stats in 2023-- unless a more balanced attack is utilized.

Considering this, it is plausible to expect a reduction in Shipley's rushing attempts in the upcoming season. The emergence of Phil Mafah as another talented back in the Clemson backfield might result in a more evenly distributed workload. Mafah's abilities could earn him a share of the carries, providing Shipley with occasional rest and preserving his productivity throughout the season.

While Shipley's carries may decrease, it does not necessarily mean a decline in his overall impact. With his exceptional athleticism and skill set, Shipley has the potential to make a significant impact in the passing game. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield, combined with Riley's offensive creativity, opens up new opportunities for Shipley to contribute as a receiver. Increased involvement in the passing game could lead to more receptions and touchdowns through the air, compensating for any reduction in rushing production because Shipley’s always working on his game.

“I’m always trying to get better. I know I’m never going to hit my ceiling, so just fine-tuning and trying to get my game to be the best it can be as well,” Shipley noted in the spring.

Shipley's versatility and athleticism make him a valuable weapon in Clemson's offensive arsenal. Even with a potential decrease in carries, his contributions as a receiver could prove vital to the team's success. Moreover, Shipley's nose for the end zone suggests that he has the ability to find pay dirt consistently. With his touchdown total of 15 last season, it is conceivable that Shipley could surpass that mark in the upcoming campaign, capitalizing on his opportunities both on the ground and through the air.

As Clemson heads into the 2023 season, the combination of Garrett Riley's offensive expertise and Shipley's dynamic skill set creates an exciting prospect for the team. It remains to be seen how the season unfolds, but with Shipley's talent, expect him to make a significant impact and continue to be a valuable asset for the Clemson Tigers.

A couple of thoughts to consider. The number of snaps we have this season and the number of games we play. Those could also factor in, but I agree if we play the same amount of games that Shipley will have less carries for sure. I could see him making some big plays and possibly rushing for more yards and absoluly total TDs could go up.

I'll guess down, up, up.

I think all three are going to be tough for him to replicate unless our snaps are way up from a season ago.
