Clemson Wide Receiver Will Taylor Shifts Focus to Baseball

Clemson’s multi-talented athlete, Will Taylor, has announced his departure from the football team to pursue a career solely in baseball. The young wide receiver, who has successfully juggled both sports for two years, revealed his decision through a heartfelt statement on his Twitter account.

Taylor's decision marks the end of an exciting chapter in his athletic journey. The talented athlete arrived at Clemson two years ago with ambitious aspirations, hoping to pursue multiple dreams simultaneously.

According to Tim Bourret, this past season Taylor became the first Clemson athlete to play on two different ACC championship sports teams in the same academic year since James Trapp played on football and men's track teams in 1991-92.

Taylor's decision to prioritize baseball demonstrates the inherent challenges of juggling multiple sports at a high level. In addition, Taylor was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 2021 MLB Draft and was projected as a first-round pick before telling teams he would pursue collegiate opportunities in football and baseball.

“You'll have to ask him,” Swinney said in the past about how close Taylor was to playing Major League Baseball. “I would say probably pretty close. I think he walked away from A LOT of money. The draft is different-- the only reason he didn't get drafted in the first round is because he decided not to get drafted in the first round.”

This past season he caught five passes for 16 yards and a touchdown in 29 offensive snaps over 10 games and also returned 10 punts for 26 yards. On the diamond, he hit .362 with 79 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, and five home runs. Taylor also had 46 RBIs and a .523 slugging percentage.

With Taylor’s move to baseball, Clemson’s football roster is now at the 85 scholarship limit.

I was telling a friend a few weeks ago this could happen. He looked great this year on the diamond. I can't wait to see how he plays with 100% focus on baseball.
