ROSTERS. Last night, Dabo Swinney was asked about Clemson’s roster construction-- essentially, their lack of use of the transfer portal. Look, it’s an evolving issue, but it’s hard not to watch Florida State’s revamped unit with Keon Coleman making plays against LSU and not desire to bring in top-flight players to fill needs.

Here’s what I’ve always said about it, even before the portal took flight. It's never a good look to go out and over-recruit a position-- meaning going to Juco to snag a kid to fill a gap, placing a committed player that’s young behind someone new. We saw that utilized for years by some programs, and the portal has now overshadowed those types of roster moves. Back then, fans were thankful to have a coach committed to the guys he brought in. A coach that allowed players in a developmental game to have a chance to grow and compete.

However, this feels different because the transfer portal has significantly increased the frequency and speed in which moves are made by players to other Power Five programs. It’s like a pro team saying they aren’t going to use free agency. It doesn’t make sense. It’s not about right or wrong. It’s about using all aspects of the game to keep up.

When only a handful of players were moving around, back when players had to sit for a year, it wasn’t nearly as significant. But right now, it’s the Wild West, and it certainly feels like Swinney needs to throw on his cowboy hat from time to time and land guys who were considered “fits” for the program coming out of high school. Culture still needs to be the No. 1 aspect, so I’m not suggesting adding players who have baggage, but if there are players that would have been a take previously because they fit what Swinney wants to build, why not go after some of those guys?

1991. Last week, Florida played their first road non-conference game last week since 1991 when they faced Utah. I thought that would be the strangest stat we saw to open the season, but I was wrong.

In Saturday’s game, Iowa, ironically against Utah State, pulled off another first since 1991-- and it just happens to be the first time in the Kirk Ferentz Era-- the Hawkeyes had an opening drive passing touchdown to start a season.

Former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara is now taking snaps for Iowa, and it may be a much-improved offense-- how could it not be? Clearly, the Hawkeyes have been bad on that side of the ball for a long, long time.

YOUTUBE TV. With ESPN and Spectrum still in a dispute, I’m sure some of you are trying to run down a home to watch Clemson football-- or any football at this point on the ESPN Family of Networks. Even the Clemson Football Twitter account got involved, encouraging fans to find a home carrying the game.

I saw a few people online asking about it, so let me tell you what I know about YouTubeTV.

It’s outstanding. It’s portable. It’s on your phone. It’s on your computer-- four screens of multi-cast games. It’s got a familiar interface if you’ve used Netflix. It has unlimited DVR capabilities. It’s got a good channel guide. The only thing you really miss the ability to punch in numbers to change the channels. You can customize the guide to have your favorite channels at the top, but even better, it learns what you watch and has those shows at the top when they are on.

It’s also got the NFL Network so that you can catch Jacksonville or your favorite NFL team.

SONG OF THE DAY. This one felt right as we head towards an opener against a team that Clemson’s never faced in Charleston Southern.

OFF THE PATH. “Hey, Siri, we need to talk.” Seriously, when Siri was added to iPhones, I thought it would be a game changer in terms of really helping me streamline some of the operations of life. Instead, she calls the wrong person when I give a simple task like, “Call Erika.” It’s mind-blowing-- wouldn’t defaulting to the ERIKA I call every day make sense?

Well, according to MacRumors.com Siri is expected to get a major upgrade.

“As an example, ‌Siri‌ might be able to do something like take a series of five photos, turn them into a GIF, and send the resulting GIF to a friend, all as one single action. Automatically converting photos into a GIF is possible right now with the Shortcuts app, but it has to be set up manually.

‌Siri‌'s functionality will be similar to what's possible with the Shortcuts app, and it is likely that it will see ‌Siri‌ integrating more deeply with Shortcuts. Shortcuts have become a key part of the iPhone operating system and can be used for some powerful automated actions. Apple maintains a gallery of Shortcut options for everything from removing backgrounds from images to creating chore lists.”

Now it's not exactly what I’d like, but perhaps we are getting closer to this unboxing scene from the movie Her.

That’s what I want: something to take care of the nonsense emails of life.

See y’all tomorrow!
