The Storylines

The news came out following Clemson’s 34-28 win over Boston College last Saturday that quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not play against Notre Dame. However, Lawrence did make the trip to South Bend and will be on the sideline this evening.

True freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei will get his second career start against the Fighting Irish on the road tonight after throwing for 342 yards and threw for two touchdowns, which was the third-most by a Clemson freshman in his starting debut, trailing Deshaun Watson’s 435 yards against North Carolina in 2014 and Charlie Whitehurst’s 420 yards against Duke in 2002.

Tonight’s contest between the Tigers and Fighting Irish is the highest-ranked matchup in ACC history. The last highest combined ranking for a game between two ACC teams was eight, set five times including most recently on Oct. 10 in No. 1 Clemson’s 42-17 win over No. 7 Miami.

Clemson running back Travis Etienne, the ACC’s all-time leading rusher will face a Notre Dame defense that ranks No. 8 in the country, only allowing 93.7 yards a contest.

Good evening everyone! We are just about 30 minutes away from Clemson and Notre Dame in South Bend. This should be a fun one tonight. Hope everyone is doing well out there.

Notre Dame will get the ball to start the game and we are underway from South Bend.

Holding on Baylon Spector on the first play from scrimmage gives the Irish a first down and immediately the Irish give the ball to Kyren Williams for a 65-yard TD. Once he got past Nolan Turner, it was a house call.

Tigers not doing well in the penalty department so far. A holding call on the kickoff return will make Clemson work on the first drive.

Clemson got a first down on the run from Travis Etienne and looked solid on their first drive with DJU, but they are forced to punt after a few plays. Irish get the ball back with 12:19 to go in the opening quarter.

Notre Dame was going to go for it on 4th and inches threatening to make it 14-0, but a flinch from the offensive line forces a field goal and it's 10-0 Irish with 5:55 left in the first quarter.

Programming note: The game is getting ready to move to USA Network because of NBC's coverage of President-elect Joe Biden's address to the nation at 8 p.m. Once the address is over, the game will move back to NBC.

The energy and focus we have been accustomed to seeing from Clemson haven't been there just yet. They were fortunate that ND jumped there and saved a second TD. That was a win in the end for Clemson. Positive play in some respects.

D.J. goes with the deep ball on the skinny post to Cornell Powell for a 53-yard TD bomb. It is 10-7 Irish with 4:11 to go in the first quarter

Friends, that's a heck of a throw and it looked effortless.

Powell continuing his play from last week -- if he can get going, this offense will be more potent. Joseph Ngata was shaken up earlier on that drive. Not sure what the extent of his injury is.

Clemson's got to start winning these 3rd-and-3 situations...

Yup. Ian Book is 5 for 5 for 71 yards and looking efficient right now against the Clemson defense as Notre Dame leads 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Notre Dame is threatening to go up two scores and Clemson was about to bring some heat and the Irish didn't have the right play called so they call a timeout. It will be third and goal out of the timeout. We're just underway in the second quarter.

Ngata got banged up on that last drive...didn't see Ladson...was that the play you were talking about?

Notre Dame's Michael Mayer drops what probably would've been a touchdown on third and goal and the Irish kick the field to increase their lead to 13-7 in the second quarter

Yes, that was the play I was talking about. You're right it was Ngata. My mistake.

Ngata is back in the game after being shaken up on the last drive.

Notre Dame sends both linebackers on the blitz to heat up DJU and forces the arrant throw and Clemson is forced to kick a field goal and the Irish's lead is cut to 13-10 with 8:32 to go before the half.

Looking at the stats so far, Clemson only has 12 yards rushing. That's not good.

Good no call with Derion Kendrick. He was just playing the ball there. Notre Dame has been forced to punt and Clemson has the ball.

Aaannd, for the second straight week, Travis Etienne has issues with catching the snap and doesn't catch the ball and the Irish scoop it up for a touchdown and it's 20-10 Notre Dame with 5:53 in the second quarter.

The officials missed the fact that he was down on the play but not sure it would have mattered. That's Travis Etienne 3rd fumble lost in 4 games

Amari Rodgers makes a catch on the slant on 3rd down but it appears he has fumbled and it was recovered by Notre Dame's Nick McCloud, the grad transfer from NC State and the Irish may be getting another turnover pending this review.

The ruling on the field stands. It is Notre Dame football. 2 possessions, 2 turnovers for two of the best offensive skill guys for Clemson.

That's a tough call...I don't think it's ruled a catch if a Tiger recovers it. I'll say that.

We had had a season's worth of fluke plays happen to us in the last 6 quarters

I agree. It would be nice to score here. We need it.

Well, Clemson avoids any more damage following the fumble from Amari and Notre Dame kicks the field goal to go up 23-10 with 2:41 to go before the half

B.T. Potter knocks through the 45-yard field goal and Clemson is down by 10 at 23-13 with 1:09 to go before the half. An impressive drive from the Tigers that took 1:32 off the clock.

Lannden Zanders is shaken up on that last play and he is headed to the locker room. Tough break for an already thin Clemson defense. Meanwhile on the field, the Irish has 17 seconds to try to get some points here.
