‘Nothing Slides’: Chad Morris Demands Accountability Early in Clemson Spring Practice

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris didn’t waste time setting the tone this spring. Just two practices in, Morris says the Tigers must “strain” — demanding toughness, accountability and attention to detail from everyone in the program.

Two days into spring practice, Chad Morris already has a word that defines the tone he wants for Clemson’s offense.

Strain.

Meeting with the media following the Tigers’ second practice of the spring, Clemson’s new offensive coordinator repeatedly returned to the idea that building a tougher, more accountable offense begins with demanding more from everyone involved, coaches included.

“We’ve got to create some toughness,” Morris said. “We’ve got to strain these guys. It’s got to start with us as a coaching staff and start with me as a coordinator. Everything counts.”

For Morris, the philosophy is simple: practices must be more demanding than Saturdays.

“I’ve always believed practice should be so much more demanding than any game,” he said. “Games ought to be a breeze for us to go out there and react and play.”

That standard extends throughout the entire program, from the coaching staff to every position group on the field.

“It starts with our staff holding those guys accountable and those guys holding their position groups accountable,” Morris said.

That message comes as Clemson installs a new offensive system this spring, creating an early learning curve for players adjusting to different terminology, structures, and responsibilities.

Morris acknowledged the transition hasn’t been easy, especially for the quarterbacks.

“Right now they’re drinking water through a fire hose,” Morris said. “As they all are with the change of system and the change of how everything flows.”

Still, the early signs he’s seeing are encouraging.

“They’re competing,” Morris said of the quarterbacks. “They’ve all done some good things at certain points, and they’ve done some stuff we’ve got to get better at. But they’re competing, and that’s what you love.”

Competition and accountability are two elements Morris believes will ultimately determine how quickly Clemson’s offense develops this spring.

And he’s made it clear the attention to detail will be relentless.

“We’re not letting anything slide,” Morris said. “Nothing slides. From the staff to the players, nothing’s going to slide.”

Morris believes that focusing on the smallest details every day is often the difference between good teams and great ones.

“It’s the little things every day that add up over time,” he said.

For a Clemson offense looking to regain its explosive identity, Morris believes that process begins long before the lights come on at Memorial Stadium.

It starts with the strain of spring practice.
