The recruitment journey of Maxwell Riley‍, a standout offensive lineman from Avon Lake High School in Ohio, has taken a significant step forward. The 6’3, 265-pound four-star prospect has narrowed his list of potential college destinations to CFB Playoff Era powers: Clemson and Ohio State. After a summer of whirlwind visits and conversations with some of the top programs in the nation, Riley’s decision looms large as he weighs his options between the Tigers and the Buckeyes.

Riley’s summer schedule included stops at Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio State—a tour that showcased the best college football has to offer. In addition, Michigan State, Missouri, and Florida State were among the schools that frequently reached out to him. Now, the competition has boiled down to two programs that have made the strongest impressions.

Clemson’s pitch to Riley has been clear and consistent. “I’d be a good fit for their program, and they put a lot of emphasis on development,” Riley shared.

That development promise has been echoed by Tigers offensive line coach Matt Luke, who emphasized Riley’s versatility and potential.

“Coach Luke pretty much told me I could probably play anywhere,” Riley said. “He also said when he was at Georgia, his two starting tackles were 6’3 and 6’4. His thing is that if you can play—then you can play.”

Riley’s connection to Clemson goes beyond the Xs and Os of the game. “I’d say the culture,” he noted when asked what sets Clemson apart.

“In Coach Swinney’s tenure, they’ve had a history of winning and, more importantly, a 99% graduation rate,” Riley stated this summer. He also highlighted Luke’s reputation for developing players as a key factor.

A recent lunch meeting between Riley, his father, brother, trainer, and Coach Luke further solidified that bond. “It was good. Really enjoyed getting to listen to Coach Luke talk some ball,” Riley said. “He continues to see me as a good fit for their program.”

Riley is set to visit Clemson this weekend, a trip he’s eagerly anticipating. “I’ll be down next Saturday,” he confirmed. As for his message to Tiger fans? “I’m just a guy that’s ready to go to work wherever I go.”

Ohio State, meanwhile, remains in the mix. Growing up in Ohio, Riley naturally followed the Buckeyes, though he’s quick to point out there’s no family connection to the program. “I really like Coach (Justin) Frye (OSU Offensive Line Coach) and how he does things. I also think the culture there is exceptional,” Riley explained, drawing parallels to what he admires about Clemson.

As he nears a final decision, Riley’s focus remains on finding the right fit both on and off the field.

“I’m just looking for a program that fits me as a player and as a person,” he said.

While he doesn’t have a firm timeline, Riley said he plans to visit Clemson and Ohio State before making his choice. For now, the Avon Lake standout is focused on doing his due diligence as he prepares to take the next step in his football journey.
