Davion Jones, from West Charlotte High School (NC), added Clemson to his impressive list of offers on June 12. The 6-foot, 175-pound athlete, ranked No. 8 at his position by Rivals and the No. 11 safety in the 2027 class by ESPN, earned the offer after competing at Dabo Swinney’s Camp on June 6.
Jones, who now holds over 20 offers from the likes of Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, told ClemsonSportsTalk.com that Clemson had always stood out as a program he admired for its player development and culture under head coach Dabo Swinney.
“Clemson was a choice because of the past history and everything they have done for the student-athletes,” Jones said, explaining why he made the trip to the Upstate. “Everything has changed since Coach Swinney [took over] and I really like that. The staff up there does things differently from other coaching staffs.”
The offer itself came while Jones was competing at a 7-on-7 tournament—the King of the Hill—at the University of North Carolina. That’s when his high school coach pulled him aside with the news that the Tigers had extended a scholarship.
“When he told me, I was filled with joy,” Jones said. “My family and teammates were just really proud of me because of how hard I worked.”
Jones plays all over the field for West Charlotte. He’s being recruited by schools as an athlete, safety, and cornerback — and even makes plays at wide receiver. Last season, he used his elite 10.79-second 100-meter speed to rack up 387 receiving yards on 20 catches (19.4 yards per reception) with four touchdown grabs and another rushing score. On the defensive side of the ball, he had 68 tackles, seven interceptions, and 15 pass breakups.
Clemson sees Jones fitting in at safety, and the relationship with his potential position coach is already strong.
“My relationship with Coach [Mickey] Conn is amazing within the couple of months we interacted with one another,” Jones said. “I truly love Coach Conn as a coach and a person.”
Jones hasn’t settled on a primary position yet — and he’s in no rush. “I like that I can help the team in many ways,” he said. “Whether that’s locking down the opposing team’s best receiver or scoring touchdowns."
As for when he might return to Clemson or announce a commitment, Jones plans to visit Clemson again, though he hasn’t set a date yet. A decision on his college choice is expected by next June.
