Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided an update Monday on sophomore wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr., who was injured in second half of the Tigers’ 35-24 loss to SMU on Saturday.

“Prayers answered. Just a blessing,” Swinney said. “A very, very scary injury. A lot of unknowns, but he’s out of the hospital. It’s a best-case scenario, but he’s done for the year. All indications are that he’s going to be okay. Just a real blessing.”

Wesco landed awkwardly on his head late in the game and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Swinney called it a back injury and declined to go into further detail.

“He didn’t have a fracture or anything like that. It’s not a Justyn Ross situation. It’s not a Mike Williams situation, but it was a very serious injury, and he was very fortunate—very fortunate,” Swinney said.

Swinney added that Wesco is “doing well” and that the team expects him to make a full recovery, but they’ll take every precaution given the nature of the injury and hold him out for the remainder of the season.

The news that Wesco has been released from the hospital is a major relief for the Clemson program after what Swinney described as “a very serious deal” immediately following the game.

Wesco had emerged as one of Clemson’s top offensive weapons this season. With him sidelined, the Tigers will look to Antonio Williams, T.J. Moore, Tristan Smith, and the rest of the wide receiver group to shoulder a larger share of the production as conference play continues.
