'The Best Guy in Camp': Clemson Coaches See Consistency in Breakout Player

Early in spring camp, Tom Allen didn’t hesitate when identifying one of the most consistent playmakers on Clemson’s defense. Weeks later, that evaluation hasn’t changed.

The consistency showed up early. It hasn’t gone anywhere since.

That’s what Clemson defensive coordinator Tom Allen emphasized Monday when discussing senior cornerback Elliot Washington II, a transfer he knows well from his time as defensive coordinator at Penn State.

Weeks into spring camp, Washington’s surge hasn’t slowed.

“It has continued,” Allen said. “It started early, and it's never really let up. And just kind of what I said in the beginning, I was excited to get him here, because I knew he could play, because I saw it with my own eyes, coaching him at Penn State.”

Washington arrived in Clemson with familiarity, not just with Allen, but with the defensive system. That comfort has translated into production almost immediately, as he’s consistently been around the football, generating takeaways and setting the tone for a secondary in transition.

As a sophomore in 2024 at Penn State under Allen, Washington appeared in 14 games with one start, totaling 26 tackles, six pass breakups, and an interception. Those flashes have turned into something more sustained this spring.

“The confidence was obvious from day one with the system and understanding it and being able to play to his fullest from a speed perspective, but he's obviously got a lot of speed,” Allen said of the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Sarasota, FL native. “But being fast and playing fast isn't always the same thing. But he's able to play fast because he understands what we're doing.”

That distinction between raw speed and functional speed has defined Washington’s early impact. Timed at 4.32 seconds in the 40-yard dash and clocked at 23 mph, he has the measurable traits. What’s stood out to Clemson’s staff is how quickly those traits have translated into instinctive, decisive play.

Head coach Dabo Swinney didn’t offer an extended evaluation of Washington following a scrimmage, but his assessment was direct.

“Elliot Washington has been, by far, to me, the best guy in camp,” Swinney said. “He's made plays every single day, every single day and he's turned the ball over more than anybody all spring.”

That ball production is significant for a unit that struggled a season ago, particularly in limiting explosive plays and creating turnovers. Washington’s presence has addressed both.

Allen also pointed to another layer of his impact that extends beyond stat sheets and highlight plays.

“He's making everybody else around him better,” Allen noted. “He's brought a swagger and an edge to him, to that group that I think was, was sort of needed for our whole secondary. He's physically tough. He's a really good tackler and so just kind of a complete package guy for us there.”

That “complete package” description reflects what Clemson has been searching for in its defensive backfield — a player who combines coverage ability, physicality, and leadership.

Washington has delivered all three during spring camp thus far.
