CLEMSON — Clemson may have entered preseason camp with a question at nickel, but Corian Gipson appears to be providing an answer.
Dabo Swinney says he believes Gipson's ceiling extends well beyond one position.
“I think Gipson has really settled in there,” Swinney said when asked about Clemson's nickel competition. “I think he's an elite football player at any position. He's got a bright, bright, bright, bright future, that kid.”
Then came an even stronger assessment from Clemson's head coach.
“I think he could probably start at five positions for us,” Swinney said. “Either corner, either safety, and the Tiger position. He's a really gifted young player.”
Gipson, listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds on Clemson's 2026 roster, is entering his third season in the program.
His versatility could make him an increasingly important piece of Clemson's secondary as the Tigers transition out of preseason camp.
Swinney said Gipson's development has been gradual rather than a sudden explosion.
“He made a big jump last year, and now he's really come on,” Swinney said. “He's probably one of the top two fastest kids on the team. He's big, he's strong, he can fly. Really proud of him.”
That combination helps explain why Clemson believes Gipson can handle so many different assignments.
The Tigers don't necessarily have to define him exclusively as a corner, safety, or nickel. Swinney's comments suggest Clemson has a defensive back with the physical tools and understanding to move throughout the secondary depending on what Tom Allen feels his defense needs.
For now, however, Gipson's work at nickel stands out.
The position requires a player capable of handling multiple responsibilities. Playing inside can demand coverage skills associated with a corner while also putting a defensive back closer to the action against the run and requiring him to operate in space.
Swinney's assessment indicates Gipson is becoming comfortable with that workload, but Clemson is developing options behind him.
Swinney said Tink Kelley has worked at both nickel and corner and is putting together his best camp. Transfer corner Donovan Starr has also taken a step forward.
“I'd say the same thing about Starr,” Swinney said. “Starr has made a nice jump in camp. He's been one of the bright spots in camp.”
Starr did provide one example of the situational mistakes that frustrated Swinney during Clemson's latest practice. After an interception in a two-minute situation, Starr failed to immediately get down and end the competition.
“Although he was the guy that didn't get down today in the two-minute drill,” Swinney said. “Freshman mistake there.”
Even with that mistake, Swinney's larger assessment of Clemson's nickel situation was encouraging.
“We're creating some depth,” Swinney said. “But we’ve still got some work to do.”
Gipson's emergence at the front of that competition could be particularly valuable for a Clemson defense preparing for a difficult opening test in Baton Rouge.
Swinney's comments weren't limited to what Gipson can provide against LSU or even what he can provide Clemson this season.
Calling a player capable of starting at five different positions is significant and makes the assessment even more noteworthy.
For Gipson, the immediate opportunity appears to be at nickel.
If Swinney's evaluation proves correct, where Gipson lines up could eventually become much less important than simply making sure he's on the field.
